The government’s focus on self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat), digital transformation, military modernization, and socio-economic reforms has changed the perception of India worldwide.

2014: Laying the Foundation for Growth
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced key initiatives that set the stage for India’s transformation. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched to improve sanitation, leading to the construction of millions of toilets nationwide. The Jan Dhan Yojana ensured financial inclusion by opening millions of bank accounts for the underprivileged. Additionally, the Make in India initiative aimed to boost manufacturing and attract foreign investments, marking the beginning of India’s push toward self-reliance.
2015: Digital & Infrastructure Development
The Digital India campaign was launched to promote technology-driven governance, bridging the digital divide across the country. The Smart Cities Mission aimed to modernize urban infrastructure, making cities more liveable and efficient. Additionally, India successfully advocated for the United Nations to recognize International Yoga Day, highlighting the country’s cultural and spiritual heritage on the global stage.
2016: Financial Reforms & National Security
A historic decision was made with demonetization, which sought to curb black money and encourage digital transactions. The launch of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) revolutionized cashless payments, making transactions seamless and boosting financial technology. 2017: Economic Reforms & Global Recognition
One of the biggest economic reforms in India’s history, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented, simplifying the tax structure and promoting ease of business. The Bharatmala Project was introduced to strengthen India’s road network, facilitating better connectivity. India also became a member of the Wassenaar Arrangement, enhancing its position in global trade and defence cooperation.
2018: Healthcare & Space Advancements
The government launched Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest government-funded healthcare program, providing financial protection to millions of Indians. The first semi-high-speed train, Vande Bharat Express, was introduced, marking a major leap in railway modernization. In space, ISRO launched GSAT-11, India’s heaviest communication satellite, boosting connectivity and digital communication.
2019: Strengthening National Security & Space Missions
Following the Pulwama terror attack, India conducted the Balakot Airstrikes, showcasing its military strength and commitment to national security. In a historic move, the government revoked Article 370, removing Jammu & Kashmir’s special status and integrating it fully into India. The Chandrayaan-2 mission was launched, taking India closer to its goal of lunar exploration, despite its partial success.
2020: Pandemic Response & Economic Self-Reliance
As the world grappled with COVID-19, India launched Atmanirbhar Bharat, focusing on self-reliance and boosting local industries. The Vande Bharat Mission helped repatriate millions of Indians stranded abroad due to travel restrictions. 2021: Global Leadership in Health & Defence
India emerged as a global leader in healthcare through the Vaccine Maitri initiative, supplying COVID-19 vaccines to over 100 countries. In defence, India successfully tested the Agni-P missile, further strengthening its missile capabilities. The introduction of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme encouraged domestic manufacturing, attracting significant investment in key industries.
2022: Economic Growth & Digital Expansion
India surpassed the United Kingdom to become the world’s fifth-largest economy, showcasing its growing global influence. The launch of 5G services marked a major leap in digital connectivity, revolutionizing telecommunications. Additionally, the commissioning of INS Vikrant, India’s first Indigenous aircraft carrier, strengthened India’s naval power and self-reliance in defence production.
2023: Space Exploration & Global Diplomacy
India made history with Chandrayaan-3, successfully landing on the Moon’s south pole, making it the first country to achieve this feat. As the host of the G20 Summit, India showcased its diplomatic strength, setting the agenda for global economic growth. Additionally, the Global South Summit reinforced India’s leadership in advocating for developing nations.
2024: Continued Progress & Vision for the Future
India continues its journey toward development with the expansion of Vande Bharat trains, enhancing high-speed rail connectivity. A significant push in semiconductor manufacturing positions India as a global tech hub, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. Furthermore, India’s growing defence exports reflect its rising status as a key player in global security and technology.
India’s transformation over the past decade has reshaped its global perception. With achievements in economic growth, digital innovation, healthcare, defence, and space exploration, the country has solidified its place as an emerging superpower. As India moves forward, its commitment to development, self-reliance, and global leadership continues to inspire nations worldwide.
