Political Turmoil Grips Himachal Pradesh

The political landscape in Himachal Pradesh is in turmoil following a contentious Rajya Sabha election that saw crossvoting and resulted in the BJP winning the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat. As the crisis unfolds, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has offered to resign, and 14 BJP MLAs, including Jairam Thakur, have been expelled by the Speaker.

CM Sukhu’s Statement: Amid rumours of his resignation, CM Sukhu affirmed that he has not resigned and that his government would complete its full term. He expressed confidence in the unity of the Congress party and its ability to win the Budget vote.

Refutation of Resignation Rumour’s: Sukhu’s media advisor, Yashpal, dismissed reports of the CM’s resignation as baseless. He urged the public not to believe opposition rumours and accused the BJP of attempting to undermine democracy.

Vikramaditya Singh’s Resignation: Vikramaditya Singh, citing unfulfilled promises and emotional ties to his father, former CM Virbhadra Singh, announced his resignation. He expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to decide on the location of his father’s statue, despite the 2022 election being fought in his name.

BJP MLAs Suspended: The 14 BJP MLAs were suspended from the Assembly for misbehaving with marshals and creating disorder. The BJP alleges that the suspension was orchestrated to ensure the passage of the budget in the Vidhan Sabha.

Congress MLAs Leave for Undisclosed Location: Six Congress MLAs who cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha polls have left for an undisclosed location in Haryana. They are reportedly in touch with the BJP, signalling a potential crisis for the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh.
