Huawei Launches $3,000 Tri-Fold Smartphone

For years, Washington’s technology restrictions were supposed to make life increasingly difficult for Huawei. Instead, the Chinese technology giant is turning each new product launch into a demonstration of how much of the technology stack it can rebuild on its own. 

The latest example is the Mate XT2, Huawei’s second-generation tri-fold smartphone, unveiled in China just days before Apple is expected to enter the foldable-phone market. Starting at 19,999 yuan, or roughly $2,980, the Mate XT2 is an extravagant smartphone even by premium-device standards. Its significance, however, goes well beyond its price or unusual form factor. 

At its heart is Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro processor, which the company says is built without technologies restricted by the United States. Huawei claims the chip delivers 42% more performance than the previous-generation Mate XT, while also improving power efficiency. The processor uses Huawei-designed CPU, GPU, NPU, and modem components, with the company positioning its LogicFolding architecture as part of a broader effort to overcome the semiconductor manufacturing constraints created by US sanctions. 

That claim will require scrutiny. Huawei’s performance figures are largely based on its own testing, and independent comparisons with Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google hardware will matter far more than launch-stage benchmarks. Still, the fact that Huawei can put a new, internally developed processor into a $3,000 flagship is itself a significant statement about the progress of China’s semiconductor ecosystem. 

The hardware surrounding that chip is equally ambitious. The Mate XT2 folds twice, moving between a conventional 6.4-inch phone configuration, a larger intermediate display, and a 10.2-inch tablet-sized screen when fully opened. Huawei has redesigned the hinge so that the main display folds inward, protecting it when the phone is closed. The device also incorporates a privacy display designed to restrict viewing angles, alongside improved resistance to water and dust. 

There is, of course, a considerable price attached to all this engineering. The Mate XT2 starts at 19,999 yuan, with higher-end versions reaching 24,999 yuan, according to Reuters. Rising memory and component costs are also adding pressure across the smartphone industry. 

That makes the Mate XT2 unlikely to become a mass-market device. Huawei appears to understand this. The phone is effectively a technological flagship, designed to demonstrate what the company can build at the high end after years of restricted access to American technology. 

And Huawei has a receptive domestic market. The company held 22.6% of China’s smartphone market in the second quarter, according to IDC, ahead of Apple’s 18.1%. In foldables, its position was even stronger: Smart Analytics Global estimates Huawei accounted for 68% of China’s foldable-phone shipments during the quarter. 

That dominance is now facing a new challenge. Xiaomi has also unveiled its premium Xiaomi 18 Fold, priced from 10,999 yuan, while Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone this week. Xiaomi’s device uses the company’s own XRing O3 AI processor, while Apple is entering a category that Huawei has already spent years developing. 

Huawei has had the luxury of developing foldables in a market where Apple has remained absent from the category. If Apple finally arrives, the contest changes from one involving Chinese hardware specialists into a direct battle for China’s affluent technology consumers. 

There is also a broader geopolitical dimension. Huawei’s smartphone business has become a living experiment in technological self-reliance. The company cannot sell smartphones in the US, and American restrictions have limited its access to advanced semiconductor technology. Yet instead of abandoning the premium market, Huawei has progressively rebuilt pieces of the technology stack around its own processors, operating system, communications technology, and supply chain. 

The Mate XT2 therefore represents something larger than another extravagant foldable. It is a test of whether technological isolation can actually prevent a determined, well-funded competitor from reaching the frontier. Huawei may still face significant manufacturing constraints, and its chips cannot yet be assumed to match the world’s leading processors simply because the company says they do. 

But that is precisely what makes the Mate XT2 interesting. The real question is no longer whether sanctions have hurt Huawei. Clearly, they have. The more consequential question is whether those sanctions have also accelerated China’s determination to build alternatives to the technologies it can no longer reliably access. 

The $3,000 Mate XT2 is Huawei’s latest answer to that question.
