Kala Ghoda Art Avenue Opens with Heritage Makeover

Mumbai, July 14, 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inaugurated the Kala Ghoda Art Avenue Beautification and Lighting Project, transforming one of South Mumbai’s most iconic heritage precincts into a vibrant pedestrian-friendly cultural destination. The project was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who praised BMC for preserving the area’s historic architecture while creating a modern public space that blends seamlessly with its heritage character.

The inauguration ceremony was held at Kala Ghoda Plaza on B. Bharucha Road in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker and local MLA Adv. Rahul Narwekar, IT and Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, public representatives, civic officials, residents and business owners.

Chief Minister Fadnavis said the project has created an attractive public realm with well-designed pedestrian pathways, open spaces and heritage-sensitive infrastructure, making Kala Ghoda a world-class destination for both citizens and tourists. He acknowledged the contribution of local businesses in enhancing the precinct.

The project aims to offer residents and visitors a safer, more enjoyable and globally comparable heritage walk experience while showcasing Mumbai’s rich architectural and cultural legacy. Kala Ghoda, known for its museums, art galleries, heritage buildings and the internationally renowned Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, is one of the city’s most visited cultural districts.

*Key Features of the Project*

Beautification of five roads: Sai Baba Marg, Rope Walk Lane, Dr. V. B. Gandhi Marg (Forbes Street), Rutherford Street and B. Bharucha Road.

Redevelopment of around 3,443 square metres across a 500-metre stretch in the first phase.

Development of Kala Ghoda Plaza using grey and black granite along with basalt paving.

Attractive pedestrian-friendly pathways and landscaped public spaces.

Open-air seating outside cafés and restaurants, inspired by European streets, allowing visitors to enjoy food and beverages in a vibrant cultural setting.

Improved lighting and streetscape enhancements that complement the area’s heritage architecture.

Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from entering the precinct, with modern barricades installed for better pedestrian safety.

Every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 pm to midnight, the five roads will remain closed to vehicular traffic and open exclusively for pedestrians.

The BMC said the initiative will strengthen Kala Ghoda’s identity as Mumbai’s premier heritage and cultural destination, offering an immersive experience that combines history, art, architecture, shopping and dining in a pedestrian-friendly environment.
