Standard Operating Procedure for AI-Powered Smart Goggles: One-Member Committee Formed Under ADGP
Security and Privacy Concerns Prompt Government Action on AI Smart Goggles
Mumbai: Raising critical questions regarding public safety and individual privacy, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled smart goggles and eyewear have come under state scrutiny. To evaluate the potential risks associated with these devices and frame a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for their usage, the Maharashtra government has decided to constitute a one-member committee headed by the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), who serves as the chief of the Maharashtra State Cyber Crime Coordination Centre.
The growing use of AI-driven smart eyewear for taking photographs, recording videos, live streaming, and collecting data has sparked widespread debate over privacy violations. Furthermore, the misuse of such equipment in public and sensitive areas poses a significant security threat. In light of these concerns, the state government’s Home Department issued an official Resolution on Thursday to formulate comprehensive guidelines.
The newly appointed committee will conduct an in-depth assessment of the technical capabilities of these AI-driven devices, including video and audio recording, live streaming, facial recognition technology, and data collection mechanisms. Additionally, it will evaluate potential threats to national and state security, as well as citizen privacy, across various sensitive locations. These include the Mantralaya, government offices, police stations, court premises, airports, railway stations, power plants, ports, defense installations, educational institutions, hospitals, religious venues, and public spaces.
According to the Government Resolution, the committee will establish a clear framework defining the permissible and prohibited uses of AI eyewear, draft security protocols, and devise SOPs to protect citizens’ personal liberties. The committee is also tasked with developing specialized training modules and guidelines for security personnel to monitor these devices and identify potential risks in public and sensitive areas.
The committee has been granted a four-month deadline to submit its comprehensive report and recommendations regarding the legitimate use and regulation of these devices.
