Mumbai, June 19, 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has achieved an estimated saving of ₹7.48 crore during the relocation of Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission towers as part of the 2,000 Million Litres Per Day (MLD) Water Treatment Plant project at Bhandup. Recognizing this achievement, Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide felicitated the engineers of the Water Supply Projects Department with certificates of appreciation at the BMC Headquarters on Thursday.
The honoured officials include Executive Engineer Rajesh Kapadnis, Assistant Engineer Hrishikesh Vartak, and Sub-Engineers Gururaj Aivale and Subodh Nakharekar.
The 2,000 MLD Water Treatment Plant being developed at the Bhandup Complex is expected to be one of Asia’s largest water treatment facilities. Designed with advanced technology, the project follows a minimum-footprint and zero-wastewater-discharge approach.
Since Tata Power’s EHV transmission lines passed through the project site, relocation of the towers was necessary. Tata Power initially estimated the relocation cost at ₹14.70 crore, and BMC paid an advance of ₹12.46 crore through the project contractor, Welspun Enterprises Limited.
During implementation, engineers under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar reviewed the actual work carried out and found the estimated cost to be significantly higher. After a detailed reassessment and continuous follow-up for applicable rebates and salvage value recovery, Tata Power agreed to refund ₹5.76 crore to the BMC.
The actual expenditure on the tower relocation was ₹6.69 crore. In addition to the refund, savings from contractor overheads, profit margins, and GST have resulted in a total estimated saving of ₹7.48 crore for the civic body. Further financial gains are also expected from the salvage value of the dismantled towers.
