Mumbai: In a move aimed at modernizing governance and enhancing administrative efficiency through advanced geospatial tools, the Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the establishment of the Maharashtra Geotechnology Application Center, to be set up as a company under the name “MahaGeoTech.”

The new entity will focus on leveraging geospatial technology to bring greater speed, precision, and data-driven decision-making to public administration.

According to the decision, MahaGeoTech will be structured into four core divisions: Modern Technology, Research and Training, Geospatial Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Administration and Accounts. The Modern Technology Division will include two sub-units—Applications and Development.

The Applications unit will be responsible for developing and implementing policies related to cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), image processing, and photogrammetry. It will also ensure standards for data quality, integrity, and security.

The development unit will focus on building and maintaining geospatial portals, designing and implementing software applications, and creating frameworks for integrating diverse datasets. It will also adopt analytical approaches to address complex governance challenges.

The Research and Training Division will undertake research and development in geospatial technologies while also organizing academic and professional programs for students, researchers, and industry practitioners. Its training unit will work to enhance the technical capabilities of participating institutions and user departments.

Additionally, the Geospatial Innovation and Entrepreneurship Division will promote innovation and support entrepreneurial initiatives in the sector. It will encourage collaboration with private organizations, non-governmental bodies, and government agencies to drive business process re-engineering and innovation-led growth.

The headquarters of MahaGeoTech will be located in Mumbai. The Cabinet has also approved an initial grant of ₹25 crore for the establishment of the company.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Maharashtra’s capacity in geospatial governance and position the state as a leader in the adoption of emerging technologies for public service delivery.
