India Canada Economic Ties Get Fresh Push as Piyush Goyal Leads Largest Ever Indian Business Delegation to Canada

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal continued his high-level engagements in Canada with a strong focus on boosting bilateral trade, investment, and economic cooperation between India and Canada.

A key highlight of the visit was a high-level roundtable meeting co-chaired by ministers from both countries, attended by leading Canadian pension funds, banks, financial investors, and senior government representatives. The discussions centered on India’s growing infrastructure sector, ongoing financial reforms, and the government’s push to improve ease of doing business, which together are creating major opportunities for international investors.

During the interaction Goyal invited Canadian stakeholders to expand partnerships with India in sectors such as clean energy, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, technology, manufacturing, and supply chain diversification. He also stressed the importance of deeper collaboration in financial markets to support sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity for both nations.

The Union Minister also held one-on-one meetings with major Canadian companies from sectors including insurance, food processing, banking, and critical minerals processing, along with prominent financial investors. Discussions focused on India’s strong macroeconomic outlook, the government’s renewed focus on trade agreements over the past 18 months, opportunities in high-growth sectors, and the increasing availability of STEM talent that is driving the expansion of Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India.

Goyal highlighted the benefits of India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, which are encouraging strategic investments and strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem. He also emphasized the country’s continuously improving regulatory environment and investor-friendly policies.

During his visit to Toronto Goyal paid tribute to the victims of the Air India AI-182 terror attack by visiting the Kanishka Memorial at Humber Bay Park. He laid a wreath, interacted with the families of the victims, and offered solemn homage to those who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

The day concluded with a reception hosted by the Consulate General of India in Toronto at the Pearson Convention Centre in Brampton. Addressing members of the Indian diaspora Goyal praised the Indian community in Canada for playing a vital role in strengthening the India–Canada business corridor. He noted that the diaspora has an important role not only in expanding trade and investment ties, but also in promoting cultural exchanges, community engagement, and the growth of Indian businesses across Canada.

Goyal is leading the largest ever Indian business delegation to Canada, comprising representatives from more than 100 Indian companies. The three-day visit, which began in Ottawa on May 25, is being seen as a major step toward reviving India Canada economic relations, with a special focus on accelerating negotiations for the proposed India Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
