3 OTT series to binge-watch this weekend

Is your weekend even complete without a binge-watch? If you nodded your head to that, but were left wondering what to watch this weekend, fear not. We’ve narrowed down the three must-watch series currently taking the streaming world by storm. From intense airport stings to historical epics and the return of Westeros, there is something for every mood.

Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web (Netflix)

If you are looking for a gritty, realistic crime procedural, Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web is the weekend’s top contender. Created by master storyteller Neeraj Pandey and premiering on Netflix, the series features Emraan Hashmi in a commanding role as Superintendent Arjun Meena. Heading an elite customs task force at Mumbai International Airport, Arjun is tasked with dismantling a sophisticated international smuggling network that moves everything from luxury contraband to dangerous narcotics. Unlike many flashy police dramas, Taskaree focuses on the meticulous, often dangerous work of intercepting syndicates in high-pressure environments.

The narrative is a tense game of cat and mouse between Arjun and the powerful kingpin Bada Chaudhary, played with chilling authority by Sharad Kelkar. The series has been praised for its sharp dialogue and its ability to ground high-stakes law enforcement in a realistic setting. Pandey’s signature style—characterized by suspenseful cliffhangers and well-defined, morally complex characters—makes this a perfect binge-watch for fans of intelligent thrillers. The investigation stretches across several countries, offering a global scale to a story that feels intensely personal for its lead characters. For those who enjoyed Special OPS or The Freelancer, this series is an essential addition to your watchlist.

Freedom At Midnight – Season 2 (SonyLIV)

Directed by Nikkhil Advani, the historical drama Freedom at Midnight returns for its second season on SonyLIV, picking up immediately after the cataclysmic events of the 1947 Partition. While the first season focused on the lead-up to independence, Season 2 delves into the harrowing and complex reality of nation-building amidst a massive refugee crisis and the redrawing of national maps. The series continues its commitment to historical accuracy, showcasing the immense challenges faced by India’s founding fathers as they attempted to stabilize a fractured nation.

The ensemble cast returns with powerful performances, led by Sidhant Gupta as Jawaharlal Nehru and Chirag Vohra as Mahatma Gandhi. This season moves beyond the political chambers to show the human cost of migration and the deep scars left by the division of the subcontinent. Advani’s direction ensures that the series feels like a cinematic epic, blending intimate personal tragedies with the sweeping grandness of national history. For history enthusiasts and those who appreciate character-driven dramas that explore the roots of modern India, Freedom at Midnight Season 2 is a profound and moving watch that remains relevant in today’s geopolitical climate.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms  (JioHotstar)

Fantasy fans have something major to look forward to as JioHotstar brings A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to Indian screens. Set nearly a century before the events of Game of Thrones, this six-episode prequel is adapted from George R. R. Martin’s beloved novellas. It follows the adventures of a young, naive but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), and his diminutive squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Far removed from the dragons and high-stakes politics of the later eras, this series offers a more intimate, chivalric look at the world of Westeros during the height of the Targaryen dynasty.

The show captures a time when the Targaryen line still held the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon was still fresh. It is a story of knightly honor, unlikely friendships, and the rugged life of travelers in the Seven Kingdoms. With Martin’s involvement as a creator and writer, the series promises to maintain the rich lore and moral ambiguity that fans expect, while introducing a lighter, more adventure-focused tone. Whether you are a die-hard Thrones fan or a newcomer to the franchise, this prequel is a beautifully crafted entry point into the early history of the realm.
