iPhone 17 Pro First Look: Bold in Orange and Power

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro represents a new chapter in its flagship series, boasting an ambitious blend of design evolution and technical muscle.

As with every Apple keynote, anticipation hung in the air, but this time there was an additional sense of surprise. The iPhone 17 Pro sheds old conventions in favor of a bold two-tone design, integrating polished glass elements that feel as much about aesthetics as performance. The polished camera bar now stretches across the back, presenting a deliberate architectural flourish that not only looks striking but improves stability when the phone rests on a surface.

The iPhone 17 Pro’s aerospace-grade aluminum unibody design promises to be a tactile delight, with just enough weight to reassure that you’re holding a premium device. The polished camera bar is more than a design statement as well; it houses three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras designed to outshine the competition. These lenses are capable of capturing more detail with better low-light performance, thanks to an upgraded Photonic Engine that leverages machine learning for enhanced color accuracy and noise reduction.

Apple’s new approach to the front camera deserves mention. The upgraded 18MP Center Stage sensor no longer requires you to rotate the phone to capture a group selfie or video. Instead, it automatically adjusts the field of view, keeping subjects centered and in focus. This capability makes for a smoother video calling experience and feels purpose-built for the content-creation generation.

Durability is front and center. The iPhone 17 Pro sports Ceramic Shield 2 on both front and back, providing three times better scratch resistance and four times better crack resistance on the back glass. The new internal architecture, featuring a vapor chamber integrated into the aluminum frame, improves heat dissipation. Apple claims that this design enables the device to maintain high performance during extended gaming or content creation sessions without throttling.

Apple’s A19 Pro chip stands as the powerhouse at the heart of the iPhone 17 Pro. With its 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU, it offers a performance leap Apple claims is the biggest ever in an iPhone. While benchmarks aren’t available yet, Apple’s silicon has for long been the industry standard, effortlessly handling intensive tasks and multi-tasking. The Neural Engine, now with 16 cores, is poised to power new on-device AI experiences and generative models.

Battery life is a crucial focus. By eliminating the physical SIM card tray, Apple was able to fit a larger battery inside, boasting up to 39 hours of video playback. This makes the iPhone 17 Pro not only the most powerful, but potentially the most enduring iPhone yet.

The camera plateau isn’t just for show either. It significantly reduces the wobble that plagued earlier models, a small but notable quality-of-life improvement. The triple 48MP camera system includes an ultrawide lens, a main lens, and a powerful telephoto capable of up to 8x optical zoom—the longest optical zoom Apple has ever put in an iPhone.

Accessories play their usual role in enhancing the experience. The new TechWoven Case provides scratch resistance with a textured, multi-colored yarn design, while the Crossbody Strap adds a functional flair. But perhaps nothing adds as much of a dash of pizzazz as the new shade of Cosmic Orange. It has been a long time since Apple launched a snazzy, eye-catching shade in the Pro range (hellooooo, Deep Purple), and the new shade is sure to turn heads and win over many.

On paper, the iPhone 17 Pro seems like a masterclass in refinement, steeped in performance, design evolution, and user-centered features. Whether this will translate into everyday joy remains to be fully tested, but Apple has certainly raised the bar, if only incrementally.
