From Asia’s largest slum Dharavi to Cricket’s grand Stage, Simran Shaikh’s Remarkable Journey to Cricketing Success

Simran Shaikh, 22, has become a symbol of hope and resilience for underprivileged communities after signing a ₹1.9 crore deal with the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 auction. Hailing from Dharavi, one of Mumbai’s most densely populated slums, Simran’s journey was anything but ordinary. Born into a family of eight children, she is the daughter of Jahid Ali, a wireman, and Akhtari Bano, a homemaker. Despite financial hardships, the family rallied behind Simran, recognizing her passion and talent for cricket.

Societal barriers often stood in Simran’s path, with neighbours questioning her choice of a sport that is traditionally dominated by men. “Why is a girl playing cricket?” they asked. However, her parents, especially her mother, believed in her dreams, even sacrificing ₹3,000 to buy her first cricket kit. This small yet significant gesture was the foundation for what would become a groundbreaking career.

Turning Adversity into Opportunity

Simran’s rise was not without challenges. In her debut WPL season, she was bought by UP Warriors for ₹10 lakh but struggled to make an impact, scoring only 29 runs across nine matches. To add to her woes, she went unsold in the following year’s auction. Many would have given up, but Simran used these setbacks as motivation. Her breakthrough came during the T20 Challenger Trophy, where her powerful batting performances caught the attention of scouts and secured her a coveted spot in the WPL auction. Her father, Jahid Ali, expressed immense pride, saying, “We have faced many struggles in life, but Simran’s achievement is a blessing. With her earnings, we can finally hope to move into a better home.”

A Star in the Making

The WPL contract has not only transformed Simran’s life but also inspired countless young girls in Dharavi and beyond. Her brother, Mohammed Nayab, is optimistic about her future, stating, “Simran will shine this season, and one day, God willing, she will play for India.” Simran’s story is a testament to perseverance, family support, and unwavering dedication. From being ridiculed by neighbours to being celebrated as a cricketing icon, her journey proves that with grit and determination, no dream is too big.
