Railways Clears ₹341 Crore Kavach Projects

New Delhi, June 15: In a major step towards enhancing railway safety, Indian Railways has approved Kavach installation projects worth ₹341 crore for the Ambala Division of Northern Railway and the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway.

For the Ambala Division, a project worth ₹201 crore has been sanctioned to install Kavach on the remaining Broad Gauge sections covering 811 route kilometres. The project includes important railway corridors such as Ambala Cantonment–Ludhiana, Kalka–Chandigarh–New Morinda–Sahnewal, Sirhind–Daulatpur Chowk, Rajpura–Bathinda–Shri Ganganagar, and Ludhiana–Dhuri–Jakhal.

These routes serve as critical rail links across Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, handling significant passenger and freight traffic and supporting regional connectivity and economic activity.

In Gujarat, Indian Railways has approved a ₹140 crore project for the installation of Kavach Version 4.0 across 598 route kilometres and 48 block sections in the Ahmedabad Division. Earlier, Kavach had already been sanctioned on approximately 702 route kilometres in the division. With this latest approval, the remaining sections will also be brought under the advanced train protection system.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to improve operational safety. It helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applies brakes in unsafe situations, regulates train speed under critical conditions, and significantly reduces the risk of collisions.

The expansion of Kavach is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to strengthen safety, modernise train operations, and improve reliability across high-density and strategically important routes nationwide.
