Maharashtra Approves ₹300 Crore Medical Cyclotron

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the establishment of a High Energy Medical Cyclotron Project (HEMCP) in Nagpur, marking a major step forward in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and medical research in Central India. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The project, estimated to cost ₹300 crore, will be implemented through Mahacare Company, with a separate subsidiary company to be created for its management. The Cabinet has also approved the allocation of 30 hectares of land at Bhansoli (Kinhi) in Hingna taluka for the facility.

The primary objective of the project is to ensure the local availability of radioisotopes required for PET-CT scans and Nuclear Medicine services, addressing the growing demand for advanced cancer care. The facility is expected to benefit patients from Maharashtra as well as neighbouring states, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

The state government will contribute ₹150 crore through the Medical Education Department, while the remaining funding will be shared equally between the Medical Education and Industries Departments. Detailed financial requirements for land development, infrastructure, machinery, and human resources will be finalised after the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Nagpur was selected for the project due to its central geographical location and its strong healthcare ecosystem, which includes AIIMS Nagpur, the National Cancer Institute, and Government Medical College. The project is expected to reduce dependence on Mumbai and Hyderabad for radiopharmaceutical supplies and advanced nuclear medicine services.

In addition to strengthening cancer diagnosis and treatment, the facility will support research, training, and academic activities, helping establish Nagpur as a leading Radiopharmaceutical Innovation Hub.

The Cabinet also approved the formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Companies Act, 2013, to oversee project implementation. Until the SPV is formally established, a Steering Committee led by Dr. Shrikar Pardeshi, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, will supervise the project.
