Toaster Trailer: Witty and Deliciously Messy

Toaster is not your conventional comedy, and the trailer makes it very clear. In this movie, hope is a blend of randomness & chaos, and it goes without saying, very uncanny. Starring Rajkummar Rao & Sanya Malhotra, this film takes the simple concept of gifting at weddings and turns it into a full-blown, unpredictable dark comedy.

The protagonist Ramakant (Rajkummar Rao) is portrayed to be so financially tight (kanjoos) that gifting someone a Toaster will lead to major life repercussions. What starts off as a wedding gift has the potential to turn into a lifelong obsession if he were to get it back. So, from the moment he gifts a toaster at a wedding until the time he wants it back, the trailer goes all out into the depths of madness and chaos.

The trailer smartly builds its humour through discomfort, and highlights Rajkummar’s comedic timing, as he plays the most kanjoos man imaginable; therefore, making us laugh out of ridiculous situations. His presentation of his character appears to be a perfect blend of being absolutely absurd and absolutely realistic, a space he has mastered over the years.

Sanya Malhotra complements this chaos while maintaining a comical tension with her presence. Her connection with Rao appears to be real, as you can almost imagine how they developed the logic behind their actions. As a result, the performance feels authentic, making it easier to believe in them despite what could have been absurd situations. Together, they anchor a story that would otherwise have gone overboard to develop into something great, but instead feels controlled in its craziness.

Another notable feature about the trailer is its tone. The film has a comedic element, but it is very different from your typical slapstick comedies. It is dark, quirky, and just a little weird. There are glimpses of situations escalating far beyond what you’d expect, hinting at crime, confusion, and a series of unfortunate, yet hilarious events. The motion of the narrative appears to move from a domestic scenario to something much larger, keeping you curious about how far this “toaster chase” will go.

The trailer’s visuals support the storytelling by embracing a slightly gritty, chaotic aesthetic that matches its storytelling. The trailer has a very fast-paced edit, but it still offers the viewer enough information to provide a basic understanding of the film without providing too many spoilers. Ultimately, the trailer leaves the viewer amused, slightly confused, and definitely intrigued.

In a nutshell, Toaster, backed by Rajkummar Rao’s impeccable comic timing and Sanya Malhotra’s effortless charm, looks like one of those rare dark comedies that fully commit to its weirdness. And honestly, it looks like a lot of fun.

Directed by Vivek Das Chaudhary and produced by Patralekhaa under Kampa Film, the film also features Archana Puran Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Farah Khan, Upendra Limaye, Vinod Rawat, Jitendra Joshi, and Seema Pahwa. The film is slated to start streaming on Netflix on April 15.
