Lakshadweep Island to receive Rs 36000 Cr infrastructure upgrade with more ports and roads

The Indian government has outlined an INR 3,600 crore blueprint for upgrading the infrastructure of the Lakshadweep islands, aiming to elevate them into a premier tourist destination, according to a government official cited by The Economic Times.

The ambitious plan encompasses the enhancement of port facilities, peripheral roads, beachfront amenities, and other critical infrastructure projects. Funding for these projects will be sourced from the Sagarmala scheme, which focuses on port-led development initiatives.

The initiative’s main components comprise enhancing port facilities on Androth, Kalpeni, and Kadamat islands, along with constructing beachfronts and peripheral roads in key areas like Kadamat Island (East), Agatti Island (East), and Kavaratti Island. These endeavors form part of a comprehensive plan to enhance connectivity and tourism infrastructure across Lakshadweep’s 36 islands, covering a total area of 32 square kilometers, positioned 220-440 km off the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea.
