In a groundbreaking medical advancement, Dr. Mohit Bhandari and his team have successfully utilized the Apple Vision Pro augmented reality (AR) device during a live bariatric surgery. This innovative procedure took place at one of Pristyn Care’s surgical centres in New Delhi, setting a new precedent in the realm of surgical precision and patient care.

The surgery, performed on May 17, involved a sleeve gastric bypass and a Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal (SADI) procedure on a 45-year-old patient weighing 155 kg, who also suffered from obstructive sleep apnea and high blood pressure which lasted 40 minutes.

Apple Vision Pro, launched last year by the tech giant, offered a highly immersive and interactive 3D environment. This allowed Dr. Bhandari and his team to visualize complex anatomical structures with unprecedented clarity, enhancing the precision of the surgery and minimizing risks. The use of this cutting-edge technology is anticipated to significantly improve patient outcomes.

Pristyn Care, founded in August 2018 by Harsimarbir Singh, Dr. Vaibhav Kapoor, and Dr. Garima Sawhney, is at the forefront of incorporating advanced technology into healthcare. The company specializes in secondary care surgeries, with a network of over 200 super-specialty surgeons operating across hundreds of partner hospitals and clinics.

The successful integration of Apple Vision Pro in bariatric surgery is a testament to its potential in revolutionizing surgical procedures. Prior to this, surgeons in Brazil utilized the device for shoulder arthroscopy, and in London, it was used for a complex spinal procedure. The device, priced at ₹2.88 lakh in India, continues to demonstrate its versatility and effectiveness in enhancing surgical precision.

Dr. Bhandari’s pioneering use of Apple Vision Pro in bariatric surgery not only marks a significant milestone in medical technology but also sets new benchmarks in surgical outcomes. This achievement underscores the promise of augmented reality in transforming the future of healthcare.
