Stay Cool on Duty: UP Traffic Police to Combat Summer Heat with AC Helmets

In a bid to alleviate the effects of soaring temperatures, Uttar Pradesh’s traffic police in Kanpur have partnered with Hyderabad-based startup Jarsh Safety to produce specialized AC helmets for its officials. This initiative follows the successful implementation of similar helmets by the Gujarat police during summer months.

DCP Traffic Aarti Singh explained that the AC helmets were developed in response to the sweltering summer conditions, aiming to provide relief to traffic police officers. Initially, these helmets have been distributed on a trial basis to officers stationed at six major intersections in the city, with plans for further deployment across other intersections in the near future.

In the past, instances of policemen fainting due to heat exhaustion while regulating traffic at intersections have been reported. The introduction of AC helmets is expected to mitigate such incidents and minimize the impact of sunlight exposure. Feedback from traffic police personnel who trialled the helmets has been positive, with officers reporting improved comfort and effectiveness in carrying out their duties.

Jarsh Safety, founded by distinguished alumni of IIM-A and BITS Pilani, specializes in innovative solutions to combat heat stress, particularly in industrial settings. Their AC helmets are designed to maintain coolness even in temperatures ranging from 40 to 42 degrees Celsius.

DCP Traffic Aarti Singh affirmed plans to distribute AC helmets to all traffic policemen, highlighting the helmets’ special features, including a charging port for convenient use. The helmets are equipped to provide cooling for up to 8 hours upon a single charge, offering practical relief during long shifts in hot weather conditions.
