First Flight on Navi Mumbai Airport will take off in April -2025: Ajit Pawar

Airport will have VVIP terminal by 2030

In a significant development, Maharashtra’s Finance Minister Ajit Pawar has revealed that the much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will see its first flight take off in April 2025. The announcement comes as the state ramps up efforts to make NMIA a state-of-the-art aviation hub. On Monday during the budget session Finance Minister for Maharashtra Explained the details of Importance of Infrastructure.

As part of its ambitious plans, NMIA will feature a dedicated VVIP terminal, catering specifically to high-profile travellers, including movie stars, business tycoons, and top-ranking government officials. This exclusive terminal will offer a range of luxury services and facilities for VIPs such as governors, chief ministers, defence personnel, and other distinguished individuals.

The construction of this VVIP terminal is set to begin in Fiscal Year 2026, with completion slated for 2030. It is expected to become a major part of the airport’s expansion, in line with a global trend where airports increasingly prioritize exclusive, high-end services for elite travellers. Families of the airport’s promoters will also have access to the VVIP terminal, which will serve as a general aviation hub for private jets and celebrity flights.

Currently, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) does not have a dedicated VVIP terminal, making the new addition at NMIA a major step in enhancing Mumbai’s aviation infrastructure. The project is being spearheaded by a partnership between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO).

The construction of NMIA is progressing swiftly, with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reporting that the airport is 90% complete. Following clearance from aviation authorities, NMIA is expected to open for operations on May 15, marking a major turning point for the city’s aviation sector.

Phase 1 of the airport development includes a terminal capable of handling 20 million passengers annually, with domestic and international traveller capacities set at 9 million and 3 million, respectively. In its second phase, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2028, NMIA’s passenger capacity will rise to 30 million. Future plans also include the construction of a permanent air traffic control tower and further expansion of the VVIP terminal.

With its focus on upscale infrastructure, NMIA is poised to cater to India’s growing demand for luxury travel services, setting the stage for it to become a key player in the global aviation market.
