The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is set to introduce a game-changing initiative for commuters between Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) with the launch of electric ferry services in January 2025. This innovative step promises to transform the way people travel, offering a faster, more comfortable, and eco-friendly option for passengers.
One of the most exciting aspects of these electric ferries is their ability to significantly reduce travel time. Commuters will be able to reach their destination in just 30-40 minutes, cutting down the journey by 20 minutes compared to the existing ferry services. This time-saving feature makes it a convenient option for daily travelers. Additionally, the ferries will offer air-conditioned seating, ensuring a comfortable and pleasant ride for passengers, which adds a layer of convenience not available in current ferry options.
This initiative is in line with the Indian government’s broader commitment to sustainable transportation and green energy solutions. It falls under the “Harit Sagar” or “Green Port” initiative launched by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPS&W). The Green Port plan focuses on reducing the environmental impact of port operations with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2047 and increasing the use of renewable energy by 60%. The introduction of electric ferries plays a crucial role in supporting these objectives, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting green alternatives for urban mobility.
These electric ferries, measuring 12 meters in length, will have a speed of up to 12 knots and can carry between 20 to 24 passengers per trip. They will operate on two key routes: Gateway of India to JNP during the regular season and Bhaucha Dhakka to JNP during the foul season, ensuring passengers have a reliable and year-round commuting option.
To make the experience even more seamless, an easy-to-use online ticketing system and smooth check-in processes will be available, offering a hassle-free travel experience for all passengers. The ferries’ introduction will not only improve connectivity between Mumbai and JNP but also boost trade and tourism in the region.
As the service launches in January 2025, passengers will enjoy a faster, greener, and more comfortable travel option, bringing India closer to its vision of an eco-friendly future.
