Ann UruvathThe video streaming industry is at an inflection point. While demand for niche, creator-led content continues to soar, the barriers to launching a branded streaming platform — from technical complexity to high platform commissions — keep the space largely inaccessible for individual creators and small businesses.
Enter Skara, a homegrown no-code OTT solution that’s flipping the script. With its plug-and-play approach, flat pricing model, and creator-first design, Skara empowers anyone — from content creators to wellness educators to regional filmmakers — to launch a fully branded video streaming app in minutes.
In this conversation, the team behind Skara breaks down how their platform is changing the game for creators across India and Southeast Asia, why they’re doubling down on anti-censorship values, and what surprising success stories have emerged from their growing community of “creator-preneurs.”
1. The video streaming landscape is rapidly evolving, but building a branded streaming app is still out of reach for most creators and businesses. What fundamental shift does Skara aim to bring to this equation?
Skara’s solution is unique as it removes several traditional barriers for prospective users. We offer a no-code platform, removing technical barriers. Skara is a plug-and-play OTT solution. Skara offers a flat subscriber fee model, enabling creators and businesses to retain 100% revenue, which is a game-changer as most providers charge a percentage of the user’s earnings. We also offer a free website and app with every subscription, which is also one of our USP that our users love. our easy to use drag and drop interface has been appreciated by many creators and businesses.
Globally, services like ours do not have such a quick deployment; they cannot be launched instantly. Most of them do not offer all services under a single pricing plan, and also do not offer a self-branded website and apps to users without any additional costs.
2. As a homegrown platform priced with the Indian market in mind, how does Skara balance affordability with the kind of robust features typically offered by global SaaS giants?
Skara’s vision is to democratize the video streaming market, so it was planned as a no-code product where anyone can stream using Skara. This helped us plan Skara and create it using robust technology, but at the same time, keep it affordable and less time-consuming.
3. Southeast Asia is a key focus for Skara’s growth. What are some unique trends you’re seeing in this region’s creator economy, and how is Skara aligning with those behaviours?
Some of the key trends that we notice are that creators are evolving into “creator-preneurs,” launching brands, courses, and products beyond sponsored content. Some prominent creators exemplify this shift, creating direct customer relations and building direct-to-customer (D2C) brands. Over 65% of internet consumers prefer watching vernacular content, which has led to a rise in vernacular content creators. Apart from this, creators face monetization hurdles (only 8-10% monetize) and platform risks like copyright strikes and censorship (8,000+ account blocks in May 2025). Algorithm anxiety and mental health issues also persist.
Skara’s current offerings are made for creators and businesses who want to monetize beyond their social media platforms. For creators with a monetized audience and greater brand control requirements, Skara is the perfect solution as they can complement their social media platform presence and bring their loyal subscribers to a branded app delivering an ad-free premium experience. We offer a data-driven approach with detailed performance and give user data to our users, helping them to grow their community and retain subscribers beyond social media platforms.
Skara also enables creators to own their content. There’s no strike, take down, or unfair censorship on our video platform. It’s an independent platform built for independent creators.
4. With recent concerns around content censorship and platform dependence, especially for independent creators, what role do you see Skara playing in shaping a freer, more inclusive streaming ecosystem?
I see Skara being a prominent voice in speaking out against unfair censorship and for inclusivity. Skara offers fully branded streaming platforms where our users can foster direct relationships with their audience. Unlike other platforms that constantly shadowban and strike creators even on educational content, we do not give any unfair strikes or takedowns. During the initial development of Skara, two values were close to us: Liberty and Control. As Skara, we want to empower our users to take control of their revenue, content, and users. These values reflect in the features that we offer and our pricing models.
Apart from being vocal about the issues of censorship and platform dependence, our offerings are also directed at independent creators, especially media, political, and financial content creators, giving them a safe space to operate. This will take time, given that we are so new, but we have amplified these issues.
5. Skara promises to launch fully functional video streaming apps in minutes. What has been the most surprising user use-case or success story so far that validates your vision for the platform?
Alternative health practitioners creating an OTT platform has been a surprising use case, which was a pleasant surprise. Some of our users have also reacted very positively about 2 of our features, which we did not anticipate. One was our community feature, and another was our drag-and-drop video management system and clean interface. We were too close to the product and had taken those for granted, so we were delighted with our user reactions, and we plan to integrate more features upon recommendation.
