With Covid spreading worldwide, the wedding season has dropped quite drastically. With limitations to the number of people who can attend your wedding, taking necessary precautions while opting for a Banquet or a Hotel. People are opting for online vows as well. A Pune couple becomes the first to have a blockchain wedding with NFT(Non-fungible tokens) and a digital priest. This is the first time that it has happened in India from an Open Sea platform.

The couple’s sayings!

Here is what the couple, Shruti Nair and Anil Narasipuram, has to say! “On Nov 15, 2021, Shruti Nair and I got married! Given the era of Covid that we live in, we decided to keep it small with a courthouse wedding, also known as a ‘Registered Marriage’ in India. We also decided to immortalize our union using blockchain technology.”

The Digital Wave!

Preparing for the blockchain wedding, the couple used MetaMask wallets and added the priest, Anoop Pakki. They also had an Ethereum smart contract which gave authenticity to their commitment to each other in the form of an NFT minted on OpenSea.

Anil said that they used his wife’s engagement ring as the image to create NFT. The NFT was named “ekatvam,” meaning ‘oneness’ in Sanskrit. “We won’t make any big promises, but we will do everything we can to make this work. Through all our disagreement and conflict, we hope to grow our understanding of each other and ourselves,” their vow on the NFT read. “We don’t expect to be the whole village for each other, but we will be by each other’s side, hand in hand, walking through this adventure together,” they promised.

Their relatives joined the digital wedding via Google Meet. The couple made vows, after which the priest gave them the blessing. The groom made the transaction and transferred the NFT to his wife’s digital wallet. “The transaction took a few minutes (and about $35 in ETH gas fees) after which we were pronounced husband and wife by our digital priest!” he said.
