Rohan Bopanna retires from national team after Paris Olympics, continues ATP tour In a heartfelt announcement, Indian tennis icon Rohan Bopanna has retired from the national Tennis team following a first-round exit in the men’s doubles event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Bopanna, a veteran of three Olympic Games, ended his illustrious national career on Monday, marking the end of an era for Indian tennis. At 44, Bopanna has been a formidable presence on the court, representing India with distinction. Despite his retirement from national duties, he confirmed he will continue to compete in the ATP tour event. Being world no. 4, this was Rohan’s last event for the country, after losing his men’s doubles opener with partner N Sriram Balaji. Bopanna's Olympic journey began at the London 2012 Games, where he teamed up with Mahesh Bhupathi in men’s doubles, reaching the second round. At the Rio 2016 Olympics, he paired with Sania Mirza in mixed doubles, narrowly missing a historic medal after losing the bronze match. Additionally, Bopanna and Leander Paes, India’s sole Olympic medallist in tennis, faced a first-round exit in the men’s doubles. Unfortunately, Bopanna did not qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Before Paris, Bopanna last represented India at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, securing a gold medal in mixed doubles with Rutuja Bhosale. This victory added to his impressive list of achievements, solidifying his legacy in Indian tennis. In January 2024, Bopanna made history by becoming the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era. At 43 years, he claimed the Australian Open men’s doubles title with his partner Matthew Ebden. This victory marked his second Grand Slam title, having previously won the mixed doubles event at the French Open in 2017. Bopanna and Ebden also reached the French Open semi-finals last month, showcasing their continued excellence on the court. Bopanna's retirement from Indian tennis rules him out of the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. He had earlier announced his retirement from the Davis Cup, citing his win against Ricardo Mello in the India-Brazil Davis Cup tie in 2010 as one of his top moments while playing for India.
