The Uttar Pradesh government has expressed support for the Supreme Court’s verdict on “bulldozer justice,” calling it a crucial step in curbing organized crime and instilling fear of the law among criminals. The state government, however, faced sharp criticism from opposition parties, who saw the ruling as a rebuke to its controversial practices.
Supreme Court’s Order
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court laid down strict guidelines to regulate the demolition of properties under the “bulldozer justice” policy, saying that the executive cannot act as a judge by demolishing properties without due process. The court emphasized that no property should be demolished without issuing a prior show-cause notice, and the affected individuals must be given at least 15 days to respond. The ruling was delivered in the case Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind vs. North Delhi Municipal Corporation and others.
Yogi Adityanath governments reply
In its response, the Yogi Adityanath-led government clarified that it was not a party to the case and welcomed the verdict, stressing that it aligned with the rule of law. A government spokesperson argued that the ruling would enhance law enforcement’s ability to tackle criminal elements, particularly organized mafia gangs. The spokesperson also affirmed that “the rule of law applies to everyone.”
Cabinet Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar also praised the order, explaining that bulldozer actions were only carried out against illegal encroachments on public property, not personal properties. He assured that any official found violating the law would face disciplinary action. “The court’s orders will be followed,” he added.
Opposition slams Yogi Governments Bulldozer
Opposition parties, however, took the opportunity to criticize the government’s approach. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi called the ruling a “welcome relief,” emphasizing the need for enforcement to prevent discrimination against marginalized communities. BSP chief Mayawati also welcomed the judgment, urging that it should end the “bulldozer terror” in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party denounced the bulldozer actions as “unconstitutional” and “illegal.”
The Supreme Court’s ruling signals a significant shift in how property demolitions are handled by the state, emphasizing due process and the protection of citizens’ rights.
