In a swift response to a major terror attack in Pahalgam, security forces successfully foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, eliminating two terrorists in an intense gunfight.
According to the Indian Army, the encounter began early Wednesday morning in the general area of Sarjeevan at Uri Nala in Baramulla, when approximately two to three unidentified terrorists attempted to infiltrate into Indian territory. Troops from the Chinar Corps responded promptly, intercepting the intruders and engaging them in a fierce exchange of fire.
“Alert troops on the LoC challenged and intercepted the infiltrators, resulting in a firefight. Two terrorists have been eliminated. A large quantity of weapons, ammunition, and other war-like stores have been recovered,” said the Chinar Corps in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). The Army confirmed that the operation is still in progress.
Timing Raises Alarm
The infiltration bid comes less than 24 hours after a deadly terrorist attack in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination often referred to as “mini Switzerland.” In that attack, 26 people, including tourists and security personnel, were killed and several others injured. Among the victims were a Navy officer and an officer from the Intelligence Bureau. The area, which is only accessible by foot or horseback, posed challenges for rescue operations, prompting the deployment of military helicopters to evacuate the injured.
Strong Response from Leadership
In the wake of the Pahalgam massacre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack in the strongest terms. Cutting short his state visit to Saudi Arabia, the Prime Minister returned to New Delhi on Wednesday morning—several hours ahead of schedule—and immediately convened a high-level security meeting at the airport.
“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice… they will not be spared. Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable, and it will only grow stronger,” PM Modi posted on X.
Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to review the security situation and ongoing operations in the Valley.
Heightened Security in the Valley
Wednesday’s operation in Baramulla underlines the heightened alertness of security forces in Kashmir following the Pahalgam attack. The infiltration attempt, intercepted so soon after the massacre, has raised concerns about coordinated efforts by terror outfits to disrupt peace in the region.
The Army has not yet released the identities of the slain terrorists, and a search operation is ongoing in the surrounding area to ensure no other militants are hiding nearby.
As tensions escalate, security agencies continue to maintain strict vigilance across Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming their commitment to neutralize any threats to national security.
