Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured the CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the Pulwama terror attack on this day in 2019. He stated, “I pay homage to the brave heroes who were martyred in Pulwama. Their service and sacrifice for our nation will always be remembered.”
The Pulwama attack, orchestrated by Adil Ahmad Dar, a 22-year-old from Kakapora, remains the deadliest terror attack on India’s state security personnel in Kashmir since 1989.
The attack, which occurred on 14 February 2019, targeted a convoy of vehicles carrying Indian security personnel on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway at Lethapora in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Following the attack, revelations surfaced that the Indian government had allegedly disregarded at least eleven intelligence inputs, including those from the Intelligence Bureau and Kashmir Police. Satya Pal Malik, the then-governor of the state, claimed in an interview with Karan Thapar that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had advised him to refrain from discussing security lapses.
The incident significantly strained India–Pakistan relations, leading to the 2019 India–Pakistan military standoff. Indian investigations identified 19 accused, with the main culprit and six accomplices being killed by August 2021, while seven were arrested.
