Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Achieves Third Mountain Tunnel Breakthrough in Maharashtra

on

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Project has achieved another significant milestone with the successful breakthrough of Mountain Tunnel MT-07 in Maharashtra. The accomplishment marks continued progress in one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

The tunnelling work was carried out using advanced engineering techniques while ensuring minimal impact on nearby communities, surrounding structures, and the environment. Extensive monitoring systems were deployed to manage vibrations and ground conditions throughout the excavation process. Comprehensive worker-safety measures, including ventilation systems, fire-safety arrangements, controlled site access, and continuous geotechnical supervision, were maintained during construction.

Earlier Tunnel Breakthroughs

The latest achievement follows a series of successful tunnel breakthroughs in Maharashtra:

  • The first mountain tunnel breakthrough, MT-05, measuring 1.5 kilometres, was completed near Saphale in Palghar district on 2 January 2026. It marked the first successful mountain tunnel breakthrough for the Bullet Train Project in Maharashtra.
  • The second breakthrough, MT-06, was achieved on 3 February 2026. The 454-metre tunnel was excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), resulting in two breakthroughs being completed within a month in Palghar district.

Among the seven mountain tunnels under construction in Maharashtra, MT-05, MT-06, and MT-07 have now achieved breakthroughs. MT-08, a 350-metre tunnel, had already achieved breakthrough status on 5 October 2023. Meanwhile, MT-03 has crossed 80 percent excavation progress, MT-04 has reached nearly 60 percent completion, and work on MT-01 and MT-02 is progressing steadily.

Of the eight mountain tunnels planned for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor, seven are located in Palghar district of Maharashtra and one in Valsad district of Gujarat. Excavation work on the Gujarat tunnel has already been completed.

Rapid Progress Between Boisar and Vapi

All three mountain tunnels located between the Bullet Train stations of Boisar in Maharashtra and Vapi in Gujarat have now been successfully excavated. The corridor passes through a major industrial region connecting the two cities, where construction activities are advancing rapidly.

The Boisar–Vapi section includes three mountain tunnels—MT-08, MT-07, and MT-06—all of which have now achieved successful breakthroughs.

Advancing High-Speed Rail Infrastructure

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project continues to showcase the adoption of advanced tunnelling, monitoring, and construction technologies. The project is strengthening India’s capabilities in high-speed rail infrastructure while laying the foundation for safe, efficient, and future-ready rail transportation across the country.
