The Maharashtra Cabinet has passed a resolution recommending industrialist Ratan Tata for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. The proposal, which was approved on Thursday, will be submitted to the central government for final consideration.
The recommendation comes following a request from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, after Tata Sons’ Chairman Emeritus passed away on Wednesday night. Shiv Sena leader Rahul Kanal had earlier written to the Chief Minister, urging him to propose Ratan Tata’s name for the prestigious award.
In his letter, Kanal described Ratan Tata as not only a visionary leader but also a compassionate humanitarian. He highlighted Tata’s philanthropic work, especially his contributions to the welfare of society’s marginalized sections. “Shri Tata Ji’s efforts towards the welfare of stray animals, providing shelter through his five-star hotels, and his work in establishing cancer hospitals for the underprivileged demonstrated his deep commitment to social causes,” Kanal wrote.
Ratan Tata, who was instrumental in shaping the Tata Group into a global conglomerate, has long been admired for his contributions to India’s economic growth and for his humanitarian efforts. His work in healthcare, education, and animal welfare has earned him widespread respect.
The Maharashtra government’s move to recommend him for the Bharat Ratna is seen as a fitting tribute to his legacy, honouring not only his business acumen but also his dedication to improving the lives of others. The central government’s approval is now awaited.
