Maharashtra Reassures Citizens Amid HMPV Concerns, General Precautions Advised

Amid rising concerns over the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak reported in China, Maharashtra’s health authorities have reassured citizens that there is no immediate cause for alarm. Health Minister Prakash Abitkar emphasized that the state is prepared and urged people to follow safety guidelines issued by the Maharashtra Health Department and the central government.

“There is no need to panic. We appeal to everyone in Maharashtra to adhere to the guidelines and avoid linking themselves with isolated cases reported elsewhere, such as Bengaluru. Following simple precautions can ensure safety,” Abitkar stated.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed that no HMPV cases have been reported in Mumbai. Citizens are advised to avoid close contact with sick individuals, refrain from touching their face frequently, and stop spitting in public places. The health department has also warned against the reuse of tissues or handkerchiefs and discouraged self-medication.

Dr. Atul Goel, Director-General of Health Services, addressed the public, stating that hospitals are well-equipped to handle the usual seasonal surge in respiratory infections. “Metapneumovirus is similar to other respiratory viruses, typically causing cold-like symptoms, particularly among the young and elderly. According to 2024 data, there has been no significant increase in respiratory outbreaks within the country. Our hospitals are prepared with adequate supplies and sufficient beds,” he assured.

He further urged citizens to take simple precautions, such as avoiding contact with others when symptomatic, and using common medications for cold and fever as prescribed by doctors. “There’s no need to panic over the current situation,” Dr. Goel reiterated.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining regular contact with international agencies for updates. Reports indicate that the rise in respiratory infections in China during December 16–22 is less severe than the previous year, and the seasonal increase in such pathogens during winter is within expected levels.

Speaking to Marksmen Daily, Ramesh Barmal, former Executive Director of Maharashtra’s Health Department and former Dean of Nair Hospital, clarified, “This is an old virus, and the situation is not drastic. Having handled the coronavirus pandemic, we are now more experienced in managing such situations. If people follow the guidelines, there’s no reason to worry.”

With robust preparations and clear guidelines in place, experts affirm that adherence to precautions will ensure the situation remains under control.
