Where Chefs Eat: Devika Manjrekar shares her Top 5 restaurants in Mumbai

Mumbai has a diverse culinary scene, with some going so far as to anoint it as one of the finest in the world. Accolades such as these have been earned with good reason, thanks to the excellence and variety of grub on offer, with something to suit all palates and budgets.

In this new weekly series, we round up Chef Devika Manjrekar’s top 5 spots to grab a satisfying meal in Mumbai. The Head Chef and Owner of Toast Pasta Bar in Lower Parel (which serves up one of the city’s best Tiramisu’s, if you didn’t already know), she’s well-known in culinary circles for her hearty food that packs in loads of flavour, as also for her bomb-tastic doughnuts that are perhaps the poster child of indulgence.

Without further ado, here are Chef Devika’s five top spots to eat in Mumbai, as spotlighted by her.

Madras Café

Nestled in the bustling neighborhood of Matunga, Madras Café is one of Mumbai’s most iconic eateries, offering an authentic Udupi dining experience. With over 83 years of history, this two-storied eatery has become synonymous with quick service, budget-friendly meals, and delicious South Indian food.

Despite its compact and often overcrowded space, the restaurant continues to draw large crowds, who come for its signature idlis, dosas, and piping hot filter coffee. The must-try dishes include Neer Masala with Stew, Idli Butter Podi, Ragi Masala Dosa, Bisibele Bhaat, and Madras Dahi Misal. A visit here is not just about the food but also about being part of a historic institution that has stood the test of time. Dig in.

Swati Snacks

Swati Snacks is a beloved eatery that has set new benchmarks in Mumbai’s chaat scene. Founded in 1963 as a small 110-square-foot establishment in Tardeo, the restaurant has grown into an iconic institution known for its inventive take on traditional snacks. One of its most famous contributions is panki—a delicate rice pancake steamed in a banana leaf—which was initially met with skepticism but has now become a bestseller. Other specialties include signature chaats with unique spice blends and hand-churned sitaphal ice cream, introduced in the 1960s.

What sets Swati Snacks apart is its ability to maintain quality and consistency over decades without relying on heavy marketing. Its popularity is entirely word-of-mouth, and it has gained international recognition by being featured in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants’ “Essence of Asia” collection. Even today, Swati Snacks remains a place where families, food enthusiasts, and loyal patrons gather for high-quality, hygienic, and innovative street food.

Seefah

Hidden on the second floor of a building on Bandra’s bustling Hill Road, Seefah is a culinary gem that brings authentic Thai and Japanese flavors to Mumbai. The restaurant, run by chef Seefah Ketchaiyo and her husband Karan Bane, is a labor of love that has carved a niche for itself in the city’s competitive dining scene. With a cozy and intimate setting, the restaurant offers comforting and flavorful dishes, from grilled meats and sushi to hearty bowls of ramen and fragrant Thai curries.

Despite its modest size, Seefah has garnered a dedicated following, with patrons appreciating the authenticity and finesse of the food. Chef Seefah’s journey, from moving to Mumbai in 2011 to working at the Four Seasons and eventually setting up her own brand, is a testament to her passion and perseverance. Through lockdowns and challenges, she has kept the restaurant thriving, and is now gearing up for her new venture “Khao Man Gai”. We can’t wait to see how that plays out.

Izumi

For many, Izumi is the final word in Japanese in Mumbai. What began as a small 17-seater sushi delivery service has blossomed into one of the city’s most sought-after Japanese restaurants.

Founded by chef Nooresha Kably, Izumi is a perfect blend of culinary artistry and deep respect for Japanese traditions. The restaurant showcases a well-curated menu that highlights both classic and contemporary flavors from Japan, making it a favorite among food connoisseurs. The philosophy at Izumi is rooted in the Japanese ethos of mastering a craft, and every dish—from the expertly rolled sushi to the rich, soul-warming ramen—is a reflection of that commitment. With its growing reputation, Izumi has cemented itself as Mumbai’s go-to destination for those seeking an authentic and immersive Japanese dining experience.

The menu constantly evolves, featuring seasonal Indian ingredients presented in innovative ways, making every visit a new experience. Dishes such as Eggs Kejriwal, have become iconic favorites. The bar, too, is a highlight, offering a mix of reimagined classic cocktails infused with Indian flavors. With exceptional food and drinks on offer, Bombay Canteen is an award-winning restaurant that is a must-visit in Mumbai.
