In a truly spectacular triumph, Indian maestros Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain, along with their fusion band ‘Shakti,’ won the coveted Grammy for ‘Best Global Music Album.’ The winning notes resonated from their latest masterpiece, ‘This Moment,’ propelling Indian music to unprecedented heights of global acclaim.

The musical prowess of these maestros, accompanied by Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck, soared to new heights as they bagged the Grammy for ‘Best Global Music Performance’ with their spellbinding work on ‘Pashto.’
Adding to the thrill, Rakesh Chaurasia, nephew of legendary flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia, won two Grammys, while the legendary Zakir Hussain achieved a remarkable feat by claiming three prestigious awards. Beside winning the ‘Best Global Music Album’, Ustad Zakir Hussain added two more Grammys to his illustrious collection.
In his gracious acceptance speech for Pashto, the esteemed 72-year-old percussionist, expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, ‘Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all these great musicians for giving us beautiful music…our deepest thanks to our families…without them, we are nothing… without love, without music, without harmony, we are nothing.’
This Moment
This Moment captures the essence of musical brilliance with eight enchanting tracks featuring John McLaughlin (guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (singer), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).
Released on June 30 of the previous year, the album not only showcases their artistic synergy but has also earned Grammy nominations, sharing the spotlight with performers such as Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido.
Despite facing stiff competition from renowned industry artists, Shakti emerged victorious, securing the Grammy for ‘Best Global Music Album’. This triumph underscores their enduring influence and global acclaim for their distinctive musical fusion.
The “As We Speak” team- Hussain, Meyer, Fleck and Chaurasia were also nominated for ‘Best Instrumental Composition for Motion.’
Taylor Swift makes history with record-breaking win
In a showstopping triumph, Taylor Swift owned the spotlight at this year’s Grammy Awards, becoming the first performer to win the award for ‘Album of the year’ four times.
