Japan Airlines (JAL) reported a cyberattack on Thursday that disrupted its operations, affecting both domestic and international flights. The airline confirmed that the issue led to delays for at least nine domestic flights.
In a statement on social media, JAL assured the public that the cause of the problem had been identified and resolved by 8:56 a.m. local time. The airline also temporarily halted sales for flights departing that day as it worked to restore normal operations.
Earlier, a JAL spokeswoman warned of potential delays and cancellations, citing network problems that began around 7:24 a.m.
The cyberattack on JAL adds to a growing list of Japanese companies and institutions targeted by cyber threats. In 2023, Japan’s space agency JAXA and Nagoya Port were both hit by cyberattacks, while the National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity (NISC) reported a prolonged breach. These incidents highlight the increasing vulnerability of Japan’s infrastructure to cyber threats.
