Geeta Batra, an Indian economist, has made history by becoming the first woman from a developing country to be appointed as the Director at the Independent Evaluation Office of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), a part of the World Bank. This landmark decision was made at the 66th GEF Council Meeting in Washington on February 9, where Batra’s name was unanimously recommended.
Currently serving as the Chief Evaluator & Deputy Director for Evaluation at the GEF’s Independent Evaluation Office, Batra has outlined her key priorities and plans for her new role. She aims to provide comprehensive evaluative evidence on the GEF’s performance, lead the IEO in environmental evaluation, and enhance the team’s skills and capabilities.
Batra’s professional journey, which started in New Delhi, has been impressive. With a background in Economics and Finance, she has worked in various roles at American Express, the World Bank, and the International Finance Corporation before joining the GEF’s IEO in 2015. Her extensive experience and expertise in evaluating development projects make her well-suited for this new role.
The Global Environment Facility, a key player in environmental conservation since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, funds numerous projects worldwide. Through partnerships with countries, institutions, and civil society, the GEF addresses global environmental challenges. Batra’s appointment is significant as the organization continues to support sustainable development initiatives globally.
Beyond her professional achievements, Batra has personal interests in outdoor activities, reading historical biographies, and trying different cuisines. Despite her busy schedule, she enjoys indulging in her favorite Indian dishes like pav-bhaji and pani-puri.
