For long the last word in luxury for many Indians, Mercedes-Benz has launched the sixth-generation E-Class Long Wheelbase (LWB) in the Indian market and once again raised the bar. This latest iteration of the iconic luxury sedan promises to redefine the driving experience, blending cutting-edge technology, unparalleled comfort, and a touch of German engineering excellence.
Pricing and Availability
The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB has been launched at an introductory starting price of ₹78.5 lakh for the base E 200 petrol variant. The diesel-powered E 220d is priced at ₹81.5 lakh, while the range-topping E 450 4Matic variant commands a premium of ₹92.5 lakh.
Deliveries for the E 200 have already commenced, with the E 220d scheduled to hit the roads by the auspicious occasion of Diwali, and the E 450 4Matic slated to arrive by mid-November. Interestingly, India is the only right-hand-drive market where the E-Class LWB is sold, further cementing the country’s significance in Mercedes-Benz’s global strategy.
Evolutionary Design Meets Cutting-Edge Technology
The new E-Class LWB boasts a refined and evolutionary design that seamlessly blends the brand’s iconic styling cues with a touch of modern flair. Compared to its predecessor, the latest iteration stands 13mm taller, 14mm longer, and features a 15mm longer wheelbase, lending it a more commanding presence on the road. The front-end design takes inspiration from Mercedes’ EQ models, with a large chrome grille, an oversized 3D logo, and a gloss black panel surrounding it, creating a striking and distinctive visual signature.
Under the hood, the E-Class LWB lineup offers a diverse range of powertrain options to cater to a wide array of preferences. The E 200 variant is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that produces 204 horsepower, while the E 220d diesel variant is equipped with a 2.0-liter mill churning out 197 horsepower.
The range-topping E 450 4Matic, however, is the true showstopper, boasting a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that delivers a thrilling 381 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. This powerhouse is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, enough to ensure the saheb races from one high-powered business meeting to the next with ease.
Enhancing the performance and efficiency of the new E-Class LWB is the integration of a 48V mild-hybrid system across the engine lineup. This innovative technology provides an additional 23 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque, seamlessly complementing the primary powertrains and delivering a more responsive and fuel-efficient driving experience.
Tailored for the Indian Market
Mercedes-Benz has gone the extra mile to ensure that the new E-Class LWB is tailored specifically for the Indian market. The company has made several India-specific tweaks to the suspension and safety equipment, catering to the unique driving conditions and customer preferences in the country. For instance, the spare wheel has been strategically placed below the boot floor, and the side and quarter glasses have been locally manufactured to enhance the overall experience.
Uncompromising Comfort and Luxury
The new E-Class LWB’s true pièce de résistance lies in its exceptional rear-seat experience. Rear passengers are treated to a level of comfort and luxury that is truly befitting of the Mercedes-Benz brand. The seats can recline up to 36 degrees, offering enhanced relaxation, while the extendable thigh support and comfort neck pillows provide unparalleled coziness. The addition of sun blinds for the quarter glass and electrically operated blinds further enhances the sense of privacy and exclusivity.
The interior of the new E-Class LWB is a technological marvel, boasting Mercedes’ cutting-edge “Superscreen” layout. This setup includes a 14.4-inch central infotainment display, a 12.3-inch passenger screen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, seamlessly blending form and function. The cabin is further elevated by a 730W, 17-speaker, and 4-exciter 4D surround sound system by Burmester, ensuring an immersive audio experience for all occupants.
Safety and Assistance Technologies
Safety has always been a top priority for Mercedes-Benz, and the new E-Class LWB is no exception. The sedan boasts an impressive array of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including Level 2 autonomy features. What sets this model apart is the inclusion of a front center airbag – a first for a made-in-India Mercedes-Benz, bringing the total number of airbags to 8.
The Active Brake Assist system has also been enhanced, allowing customers to customize their preferences rather than reverting to the default mode on every start. Additionally, the steel spring suspension with selective damping system has been specially tuned to provide a smooth and comfortable ride, catering to the needs of rear-seat passengers and the diverse driving conditions in India.
Rivals and Competitive Landscape
The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB faces stiff competition in the Indian luxury sedan segment, primarily from the BMW 5 Series LWB. However, the E-Class maintains a distinct advantage, as it is the only other long-wheelbase model available in this segment. Interestingly, the BMW 5 Series LWB is offered solely in a top-spec M Sport petrol variant, while the E-Class lineup offers a broader range of powertrain options to cater to diverse customer preferences.
The new E-Class LWB’s starting price of ₹78.5 lakh is approximately ₹2.5 lakh more than its predecessor, showcasing the brand’s commitment to delivering an enhanced product. This price point also positions the E-Class LWB ₹5.6 lakh higher than its direct rival, the BMW 5 Series LWB, underscoring the Mercedes-Benz brand’s premium positioning and the additional value it offers to discerning customers.
Chauffeur Package and Customization Options
For those who prefer a more luxurious and personalized driving experience, Mercedes-Benz offers an optional Chauffeur package for the new E-Class LWB. This exclusive package caters to the needs of discerning customers who prioritize the rear-seat experience, providing a host of premium features and amenities to elevate their journey.
Mercedes’ Star Shines Bright
The arrival of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB in India marks a significant milestone in the brand’s ongoing pursuit of excellence. With its striking design, cutting-edge technology, uncompromising comfort, and a host of India-specific features, this luxury sedan is poised to captivate the hearts and minds of discerning Indian consumers. As Mercedes-Benz continues to push the boundaries of innovation, the new E-Class LWB stands as a testament to the brand’s unwavering dedication to delivering a truly exceptional driving experience.
