Mahindra Launches BE 6e and XEV 9e Electric Coupe-SUVs At Mouthwatering Prices

Mahindra has made a bold statement in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the simultaneous launch of two innovative electric coupe-SUVs: the BE 6e and the XEV 9e. These vehicles represent a significant leap forward for the Indian automotive manufacturer, showcasing their commitment to electric mobility and cutting-edge design.

A New Era of Electric Vehicles

The BE 6e and XEV 9e are harbingers of Mahindra’s electric-only BE sub-brand. Priced competitively at a starting price of Rs 18.90 lakh and Rs 21.90 lakh respectively, these vehicles are set to disrupt the Indian EV market with their striking design, advanced technology, and expectedly impressive performance.

Platform and Design Philosophy

Both vehicles are built on Mahindra’s scalable and modular INGLO born-EV platform, which employs much-vaunted BYD’s blade cell technology. This innovative platform ensures consistency across the range, with both models sharing an identical 2,775mm wheelbase. The design philosophy is radical and forward-thinking, with both vehicles staying remarkably true to their concept car origins.

Mahindra BE 6e: A Glimpse into the Future

The BE 6e is the first product from Mahindra’s electric-only BE sub-brand, and it makes a stunning first impression. The exterior design is almost identical to the original concept, with sharp, edgy styling that turns heads. Notable design elements include:

  • C-shaped LED daytime running lamps
  • Illuminated logos
  • Pronounced wheel arches with gloss black cladding
  • A unique air duct between lights for improved efficiency
  • High-deck rear with a coupe roofline

Performance and Powertrain

The BE 6e offers two battery pack options:

  • 59kWh variant: 228hp
  • 79kWh variant: 281hp

Both variants deliver 380Nm of torque, with Mahindra claiming it can accelerate from 0-100 kph in just 6.7 seconds. Currently available in rear-wheel drive, Mahindra hinted at a potential all-wheel-drive version in the future.

Innovative Interior

The interior is equally revolutionary, featuring among other things:

  • A halo-like trim creating a cockpit-like feel
  • Dual 12.3-inch floating screens with MAIA software
  • Augmented reality head-up display
  • Aircraft-style drive mode selector
  • Dolby Atmos 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system

Range and Charging

The BE 6e impresses with its range too. Mahindra claims that the 79kWh battery can run for an estimated 682km (as per ARAI tests), or 550km (as per WLTP testing patterns). The 59kWh battery clocked a more modest 535km in ARAI testing.

Mahindra promises fast charging capabilities, with batteries capable of charging from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes using a 175kW DC fast charger.

Mahindra XEV 9e: Luxury Meets Electric Performance

The XEV 9e, positioned as the larger and more premium of the two models, offers its own set of impressive features. Slightly larger than the BE 6e, the XEV 9e measures 4,790mm in length. Design highlights include:

  • Blanked-out grille with LED light bar
  • Flush door handles
  • Muscular shoulder line
  • Slim, connected LED tail-lights
  • Unique ‘infinity Mahindra’ illuminated logo

The interiors of the XEV 9E boasts an eye-catching interior packed with features, including three 12.3-inch screens, a two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a class-leading 665-litre boot and 150-litre frunk, panoramic sunroof, 16-speaker Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos, Level 2 ADAS suite, 360-degree camera, and more.

Both vehicles showcase Mahindra’s technological prowess, with the company pointing at a lifetime battery warranty as a sign of their confidence in the technology underpinning the vehicles. The car is packed to the gills with features, such as brake-by-wire technology, multiple drive modes, advanced connectivity features, and OTA (Over-The-Air) updates for future readiness.

When can you expect to get one?

Mahindra plans to begin deliveries of both models in February or March 2025. The competitive pricing, coupled with advanced features and impressive performance, positions these vehicles as strong contenders in the rapidly evolving Indian EV market. It’s worth noting that Mahindra has only revealed limited info about pricing, will full pricing and details to be revealed later. It’s a playbook they’ve used to drum up interest with the Thar Roxx, to great success. And truthfully, one expects Tata Motors and MG to sit up and take notice. Expect price revisions and offers galore as automakers get set for the latest round of electric boogaloo.

Looking ahead

By combining striking (if polarising) design, advanced technology, and competitive pricing, these vehicles challenge the established pecking order of electric vehicles and demonstrate the exciting potential of making electric transportation the norm in India rather than the exception.

As the automotive world shifts towards electrification, Mahindra has clearly signaled its intent to be a major player in this transformative era. The BE 6e and XEV 9e has set the cat among the pigeons, and as buyers, one somewhat anticipates the bloodbath that is to follow.
