Why is Trump dodging a face-off with VP Kamala Harris? 

As the 2024 presidential election cycle heats up, all eyes have been on the potential showdown between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. The anticipation for a high-stakes debate between these two political heavyweights has been palpable, with voters eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see them go head-to-head on the national stage. However, in a surprising turn of events, it appears that Trump may be hesitant to commit to such a debate, leaving many to wonder what’s really behind his reluctance. 

The drama surrounding a potential Trump-Harris debate kicked off when Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the previously agreed-upon debate being hosted by ABC. In a series of scathing posts on Truth Social, the former president lambasted the network, referring to it as “Fake News ABC” and taking aim at anchor George Stephanopoulos, whom he described as “the meanest and most vicious Interviewer out there.” Trump’s gripe seemed to stem from his long-standing feud with the network and its perceived liberal bias. 

Trump’s “Anytime, Anywhere” promise… or is it? 

Adding to the confusion, Trump had previously stated that he was prepared to debate Biden “ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, ANYPLACE!” on Truth Social back in March. This bold declaration raised expectations that he would be equally willing to face off against Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee. However, as the September 10th debate date approached, Trump’s campaign began to backtrack, with spokesperson Steven Cheung suggesting that it would be “inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats very well could still change their minds.” 

Recent polls by Reuters/Ipsos might well indicate that this won’t be the case though, as VP Kamala Harris opened up a slim two-percentage-point lead over Trump not long after President Biden ended his re-election campaign and left the field open. This is significant as Biden had a two-point deficit to Trump in the polls run prior to his exit on Sunday. 

The mysterious “Marxist Fraud” claim 

In a bizarre twist, Cheung’s statement went on to claim that there was a “strong sense by many in the Democrat Party – namely Barack Hussein Obama – that Kamala Harris is a Marxist fraud who cannot beat President Trump, and they are still holding out for someone ‘better.'” This assertion, which appeared to have no factual basis, only served to further muddy the waters and raise more questions about the Trump campaign’s true motivations. 

The Fox News invitation: A potential compromise? 

Sensing an opportunity to break the impasse, Fox News stepped in and invited both Harris and Trump to a debate on September 17th in Pennsylvania. The network suggested that its anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum moderate the event, but also said it was “open to discussion” on the exact date, format, and location. This olive branch from the Trump-friendly network seemed like a potential compromise, but the former president’s campaign remained non-committal, stating that “general election debate details cannot be finalized until Democrats formally decide on their nominee.” 

Kamala Harris’ confident quip 

Amid the back-and-forth, Kamala Harris herself weighed in on the debate saga, sharing a clip from a 2019 appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” In the clip, Harris jokingly told host Jimmy Fallon that if she were to debate Trump, she’d “wipe the floor with him.” This confident quip not only showcased Harris’ sense of humour, but also hinted at her potential readiness to take on the former president on the debate stage. 

The lingering questions 

As the political world continues to follow this unfolding saga, several questions remain unanswered. Why is Trump seemingly so reluctant to commit to a debate with Harris? Is it truly a matter of network bias, or is there something more strategic at play?
