Kia EV9

Let’s be honest. If you’re looking to buy a three-row family mover, that can genuinely be usable in all three rows, it’s slim pickings these days in India. The Innova is hugely popular, but what if you want something a bit more upmarket? The Kia Carnival used to be a great option (until it was discontinued, that is). But its replacement could be here soon in the form of an electric family mover that will likely be its flagship. Meet the EV9.

Kia’s ambitious expansion in India

Kia has been making waves in the Indian automotive landscape, particularly with the impressive EV6, and the impending launch of the EV9 is just the latest chapter in the brand’s ambitious growth strategy. Dubbed “Kia 2.0,” the company’s transformation plan aims to capture a 10% market share in the highly competitive Indian market in the coming years. This bold vision involves introducing a slew of new models, including the EV9, as well as doubling the brand’s touchpoints to around 600 nationwide.

The EV9: Kia’s electrified flagship

The EV9 is Kia’s most premium and largest electric SUV, designed to take on the likes of the BMW iX, Audi e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz EQC. This boxy, upright behemoth made its global debut in March 2023, showcasing a distinct two-box design that’s sure to turn heads on Indian roads.

One of the standout features of the EV9 is its three-row cabin, offering seating for up to seven passengers. Depending on the variant, customers can choose from a variety of seating layouts, ensuring that this electric SUV can accommodate the diverse needs of Indian families and adventure-seekers alike.

Powertrain and range options

The EV9 will potentially be available with a range of powertrain options, catering to the diverse preferences of Indian consumers. The entry-level variant will feature a 76.1 kWh battery pack and a single electric motor powering the rear wheels, delivering a claimed range of 358 km on a single charge.

For those seeking greater range, the mid-level variant will come equipped with a larger 99.8 kWh battery, offering an impressive 541 km of range on a single charge. And for the true performance enthusiasts, the top-spec dual-motor AWD variant will deliver a potent 380 hp and 600 Nm of torque, making it a true electric powerhouse.

Cutting-edge technology and features

The Kia EV9’s cabin is a technological marvel, boasting a twin-screen setup that seamlessly integrates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Meridian’s premium 14-speaker sound system, an adjustable smart power tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof are just a few of the other features that promise to elevate the driving experience.

Exterior design: Bold and distinctive

The EV9’s exterior design is a bold departure from the sleek, aerodynamic lines of its EV6 sibling. With its boxy profile, tall pillars, and flat roofline, the EV9 exudes a commanding presence on the road. The distinctive sealed-off front grille, flanked by vertical LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, adds to the SUV’s striking visual appeal.

Pricing and positioning

The Kia EV9 is expected to be the most expensive model in the brand’s Indian lineup, rivaling the pricing of the BMW iX, which starts upwards of ₹1 crore. As a fully imported model, the EV9 will be available in limited numbers, catering to a niche segment of discerning customers who seek a premium, sustainable, and technologically advanced electric SUV.

A glimpse of the future

The arrival of the Kia EV9 in India is not just about a new model launch; it’s a glimpse into the future of the country’s automotive landscape. As Kia continues to expand its electrified offerings, it’s clear that the brand is committed to leading the charge towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious driving experience for Indian consumers.
