Alibaba claims that Qwen 2.5, particularly its Qwen 2.5-Max variant, surpasses not only its domestic rival DeepSeek’s V3 model but also global heavyweights like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Meta’s Llama-3.1-405B.  

This announcement has intensified the already fierce competition in the AI sector, both in China and globally. As the AI race heats up, the stakes are higher than ever, with companies vying for dominance in a market that could define the future of technology. 

What is Qwen 2.5? 

Qwen 2.5 is the latest iteration of Alibaba’s AI model, developed by its cloud computing division. According to Alibaba, Qwen 2.5-Max outperforms leading AI models across a range of benchmarks, including Arena-Hard, LiveBench, LiveCodeBench, and GPQA-Diamond. The company has also highlighted its competitive performance in MMLU-Pro, a benchmark that evaluates AI models on multitask language understanding, on its GitHub. 

Alibaba’s claims are bold: Qwen 2.5-Max is said to surpass OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Meta’s Llama-3.1-405B, and DeepSeek’s V3 model “almost across the board.” The company has released benchmarking results on its GitHub page, showing that its instruct models—designed for tasks like chat and coding—outperform these competitors in most areas.  

While Alibaba acknowledges that it cannot directly compare Qwen 2.5-Max to proprietary models like GPT-4o and Claude 3.5-Sonnet, it has positioned its model as a leading open-weight AI system, capable of competing with the best in the industry. 

DeepSeek: A Catalyst for the AI Scramble 

The release of Qwen 2.5 comes at a time when DeepSeek, a relatively new player in the AI space, has been making waves with its rapid advancements. ByteDance claims its model outperforms OpenAI’s o1 in AIME, a benchmark that measures AI comprehension and response accuracy.
