MG Unveils the Windsor EV with Innovative Battery-as-a-Service Model

If electric vehicles (EVs) have shaken up the automotive industry, MG Motors is looking to do the same to the tried-and-trusted buy-it-and-own-it consumer model for vehicles.

The MG Windsor EV, a crossover utility vehicle (CUV), isn’t just unconventional because of its design. It is the brand’s third electric offering, joining the ranks of the ZS EV and the quirky Comet, and priced at an introductory figure of ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). But the real twist lies in the way the battery is integrated into the ownership model.

Battery-as-a-Service: Unlocking Affordability and Flexibility

The MG Windsor EV’s BaaS allows customers to separate the cost of the vehicle from the cost of the battery. Instead of paying a hefty upfront sum for the battery, buyers can opt for a more accessible pay-as-you-go model, where the battery rental is charged at a rate of ₹3.5 per kilometer. This innovative approach not only reduces the initial outlay for the EV but also provides a level of flexibility that traditional ownership models have lacked.

BaaS: Making EVs More Accessible

The BaaS model addresses a key concern that has often deterred potential EV buyers – the high upfront cost associated with battery ownership. By decoupling the battery from the vehicle, the Windsor EV becomes a more affordable proposition, making electric mobility within reach of a wider audience. This strategic move by MG aligns with the government’s push for increased EV adoption, as it helps overcome one of the primary barriers to entry.

Lifetime Warranty and Buyback Guarantee

To further sweeten the deal, MG has introduced a slew of incentives and assurances for Windsor EV buyers. The battery pack comes with a lifetime warranty, ensuring that customers don’t have to worry about the long-term performance and degradation of this critical component, whose cost can be eye-watering. Additionally, MG is offering a 60% buyback value after three years of ownership. While 40% depreciation might be a bit much after 3 years of ownership, bear in mind that EVs have shown terrible resale value, and the 60% residual value is a guaranteed sum, thus providing a strong resale value proposition.

Charging Convenience: Free Public Charging for the First Year

Recognizing the importance of a robust charging ecosystem, MG is also offering free public charging at its e-hubs for the first year of Windsor EV ownership. This move not only addresses range anxiety but also makes the ownership experience more convenient and cost-effective for early adopters. By leveraging its growing network of charging stations, MG is positioning the Windsor EV as a practical and accessible choice for urban and suburban commuters. What’s more, if you have a solar-powered home, this would make charging and owning the Windsor a zero-cost option.

The Design and Styling of the Windsor EV

The MG Windsor EV features a curvaceous, minimalist look with flush door handles, a full-width LED light bar at both ends, and a stepped front-end design that lends an air of sophistication.

The Windsor EV’s interior continues the theme of thoughtful design, with a focus on passenger comfort and convenience. The cabin boasts a minimalist, all-black aesthetic, complemented by tasteful copper accents that add a touch of elegance. The highlight of the interior is the rear seating, which can recline up to 135 degrees, akin to the first-class experience of international flights. This lounge-like setup, combined with features like a panoramic sunroof, air purification system, and ambient lighting, creates an inviting ambiance within the cabin.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Connectivity

The MG Windsor EV is equipped with a host of advanced features and technologies that cater to the modern, tech-savvy buyer. At the heart of the cabin is a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that seamlessly integrates with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The driver is treated to an 8.8-inch digital display, providing a comprehensive overview of the vehicle’s vital information. Further enhancing the connected experience, the Windsor EV boasts over 80 connected features, ensuring that owners can stay informed and in control of their driving experience.

Safety and Assistance: Prioritizing Passenger Well-being

Ensuring the safety of its occupants is a top priority for MG, and the Windsor EV is no exception. The vehicle is equipped with a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, and electronic stability control. For added protection, the Windsor EV is fitted with six airbags, ABS with EBD, and other essential safety features.

Powertrain and Performance: Balancing Efficiency and Capability

Powering the MG Windsor EV is a single electric motor that delivers a respectable 134 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. This setup is paired with a 38 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack, which promises a claimed range of 331 km on a single charge. The battery can be charged from 0 to 80% in just 55 minutes using a 45 kW fast-charging system, ensuring a convenient and efficient charging experience.

Competitive Positioning: Challenging the Status Quo

With its introductory price of ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the MG Windsor EV finds itself in a unique position, competing with a diverse range of offerings, from the Tata Curvv EV and Nexon EV Max to the Mahindra XUV400. The Windsor EV aims to disrupt the established order by providing a compelling alternative that combines affordability, comfort, and technological prowess.

The Windsor EV with its innovative Battery-as-a-Service model represents a significant milestone in the evolution of electric mobility in India. By addressing the key barriers to EV adoption, such as high upfront costs, concerns over resale, and cost of battery replacement, MG has positioned the Windsor as a game-changer that could pave the way for increased electric vehicle ownership across the country. As the automotive landscape continues to transform, the Windsor EV’s unique approach will likely find it having takers among families that are looking for a reasonably priced city runabout. Only time will tell if MG’s approach, a bold and differentiated one, finds resonance among the masses. If it does, expect it to set a precedent for others to follow.
