Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt unveils AI-powered drone that aims to transform Ukraine's defense

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, has unveiled ambitious plans for his new drone startup, White Stork, which intends to support Ukraine’s defense by developing AI-powered attack drones. These advanced drones are designed to autonomously identify and engage targets, potentially revolutionizing modern warfare by minimizing the need for traditional ground combat.

In an April lecture at Stanford University, Eric Schmidt voiced his deep frustration with the ongoing devastation in Ukraine, particularly the widespread destruction inflicted by Russian forces. “Watching the Russians use tanks to destroy apartment buildings with little old ladies and kids just drove me crazy,” he remarked, underscoring his emotional connection to the conflict and his desire to make a difference.

Schmidt also disclosed that he is collaborating with Sebastian Thrun, CEO of Udacity, on White Stork. Together, they aim to leverage artificial intelligence in sophisticated and transformative ways for what Schmidt refers to as “essentially robotic wars.” The startup’s mission is to mass-produce these highly advanced drones at reduced costs, enabling them to play a critical role on the battlefield by replacing the need for tanks and other heavy artillery.

With strong governmental backing, Schmidt expressed confidence that these AI-driven drones would soon be deployed directly into Ukraine to support the war effort. “They will go straight into Ukraine and fight the war,” he stated emphatically during his Stanford address.

Schmidt’s venture into military technology is not surprising given his extensive experience in the field of artificial intelligence. He previously chaired the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, further solidifying his expertise in applying AI to critical national security challenges. Schmidt served as Google’s CEO from 2001 to 2011, a period during which the company experienced unprecedented growth and innovation.
