Is Stree 2’s poster a rip-off of Strangers Thing 2? 

Stree 2 is one of the mostly highly anticipated films of 2024 and is set to light up the box office on Independence Day. The film, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles, is a key part of Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe and is widely expected to be a blockbuster. 

The film has already made waves with its advance bookings for the opening day, including the previews, hitting a remarkable 1.3 lakh tickets sold. Stree 2 is entering a competitive market, going head-to-head with other major releases like Tiger 3 and Brahmāstra, among others. 

What’s truly noteworthy is that Stree 2 has already surpassed the opening day benchmark set by its predecessor. The original Stree, released in 2018, had an opening day collection of ₹6.82 crores and went on to gross nearly ₹130 crores during its theatrical run. In contrast, Stree 2 has already sold more than 2.21 lakh tickets through advance bookings alone, raking in ₹6.87 crores. Also, with two days still to go before its release, it’s well on track to easily cross the ₹10 crore mark on opening day. 

Stree 2 is not just a sequel, it’s the much-awaited continuation of Amar Kaushik’s 2018 hit Stree. Which also marks the fifth installment in Maddock’s Supernatural Universe. However, the film’s promotional material has sparked some controversy online. Some netizens have pointed out that the poster for Stree 2 bears a striking resemblance to the poster for Stranger Things 2, the second season of Netflix’s popular series that debuted in 2017. 

Many netizens have labeled it a “direct lift”, with both posters boasting a blue and orange colour scheme, with the movie title spelled out in red. The cast is laid out in a pyramid format, with the cast showing similar expressions too. Netizens have been quick to call it a rip-off. However, fans of Stree 2 argue that while the color schemes may be similar, the background and other details are distinctly different, and that the poster cleverly incorporates numerous references to the film itself.
