“Never felt a punch like this”: Italian boxer abandons Paris Olympics bout after 46 seconds 

Angela Carini, an Italian boxer, withdrew from her bout at the Paris Olympics just 46 seconds into the match after taking a heavy punch from Algerian opponent Imane Khelif. The incident has ignited a fresh wave of debate over gender and fair play in sports. 

Carini’s decision to abandon the fight came after Khelif delivered a powerful blow to her face. After pausing momentarily, Carini turned her back on Khelif and walked to her corner, signaling that she would not continue. The referee promptly stopped the fight. 

Visibly emotional, Carini declined to shake Khelif’s hand and fell to her knees in the ring, crying. “I am heartbroken,” she told reporters. “I went to the ring to honor my father. I was told many times that I was a warrior, but I chose to stop for my health. I have never felt a punch like this.” 

Khelif’s eligibility to compete has been controversial. The 25-year-old Algerian boxer was banned from last year’s world championships after failing to meet eligibility requirements for women’s events. Despite this, Khelif was permitted to compete at the Olympics. Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, another athlete banned under similar circumstances, has also been cleared to fight in Paris. 

The inclusion of Khelif and Lin has fueled the ongoing debate about gender and fair play in sports. Khelif is considered legally female but is intersex, possessing both X and Y chromosomes, and has natural testosterone levels typical of males. 

The IOC released a statement on the controversial issue, with IOC spokesperson Mark Adams saying, “This involves real people, and we are talking about real people’s lives here…They have competed, and they continue to compete in the women’s competition. They have lost and they have won against other women over the years,” IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said on Thursday. 

The Algerian Olympic Committee was quick to react, condemneing the outrage against their athlete and standing by Khelif as they blamed foreign media for spreading “lies” and “unethical targeting and maligning” of Khelif. 

The International Boxing Association excluded Khelif from the 2023 world championships after tests revealed her chromosomal makeup. This decision has faced both criticism and support from various quarters. 

Social media reactions have been swift and polarised.  

Riley Gaines tweeted, “After 46 seconds and a few hits to the face by a male, Carini forfeited the fight. Call me crazy, but it’s almost as if women don’t want to be punched in the face by a male as the world watches and applauds.” The Women’s Right Network also voiced their disapproval, stating, “This is the face of a woman forced into fighting a male by #Olympicsgames rules that harm women. Shame on the International Olympics Federation @iocmedia, the darkest day for women’s sport.”
