Inspirational Journey of Akshar Foundation: Turning Trash into Fortune

In the heart of Assam’s Pamohi village, a remarkable transformation is taking place every morning as students eagerly clutch bags of plastic waste, trading them for the gift of education. This is the inspiring tale of Akshar School, a beacon of hope founded by the dynamic duo, Mazin Mukhtar and Parmita Sarma, whose mission is not just to educate, but to empower.

The journey began amidst the backdrop of environmental distress. Toxic bonfires engulfed the village, choking classrooms with hazardous fumes, leaving children gasping for breath. The founders recognized the urgent need for change and seized upon a bold solution: exchange plastic waste for schooling. By waiving fees and encouraging parents to send their children to school with plastic for fees instead of burning it at home, they rallied the community to action.

However, the school’s impact reaches far beyond the classroom walls. Recognizing the economic challenges faced by families, Akshar School offers vocational training, equipping students with practical skills in solar panel installation, carpentry, and electronics. This not only enhances employability but also fosters a sense of self-worth and independence among the youth.

The innovative approach doesn’t stop there. In a stroke of brilliance, the school devised a peer-to-peer mentorship system, where older students tutor younger ones in exchange for toy currency. This initiative not only reduces child labor but also instills a sense of responsibility and friendship among students, fostering a supportive community ethos.

The impact is visible as dropout rates are non-existent, and students are thriving academically and emotionally. Through their earnings students can afford simple luxuries like cellphones, a dream beyond reach for many of their parents. But perhaps most importantly, the school is transforming attitudes. From anger and aggression, students emerge as energetic, optimistic individuals, ready to take on the world.
