Maharashtra Leads India’s Green Mobility Push with Full Range of Electric Trucks

Mumbai: Maharashtra is once again emerging as a leader in green transportation, with Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik highlighting the state’s commitment to accelerating electric mobility.

Speaking at the unveiling of Tata Motors’ first complete range of battery-electric trucks in India, covering capacities from 7 to 55 tonnes, Sarnaik said the development marks an important milestone in India’s transition towards clean and sustainable transportation.

“Maharashtra is the first state in the country to formulate a separate policy for battery and electric trucks. The state is once again showing the nation the way towards green transportation,” Sarnaik said.

He noted that Maharashtra’s EV policy has created a favourable ecosystem for vehicle manufacturers, industries and the transport sector. The trucks, designed and developed by Indian engineers in Pune, represent the strength of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, he added.

With a range of up to 350 km on a single charge, fast-charging capability and lower operating costs, electric trucks are expected to reduce pollution as well as fuel and overall transportation expenses.

Sarnaik said electrification of the transport sector will be crucial for achieving India’s net-zero target by 2070. He also stressed that collaboration between the government, automobile manufacturers and transport operators, supported by initiatives such as PM E-DRIVE, can accelerate the adoption of electric commercial vehicles.

He added that the shift to electric mobility will generate opportunities in battery technology, R&D, manufacturing, charging infrastructure and vehicle services, creating new avenues for employment and skill development.

“Maharashtra will not merely participate in this transformation; it will lead it,” Sarnaik said.
