Cabinet Approves Ahmedabad Metro Airport Corridor Project

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening urban connectivity and improving access to Ahmedabad Airport.

The newly approved corridor will span 6.032 kilometres and feature five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station. The stations planned along the route are Ashram Road, Koteshwar Ancient Temple, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport.

Upon completion, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 kilometres, further enhancing public transportation across the region. The total project cost, including Interest During Construction (IDC), has been estimated at ₹2,169.04 crore.

Boost to Connectivity and Urban Development

The Phase 2A corridor is designed to provide seamless metro connectivity to Ahmedabad Airport while linking major residential and commercial areas that currently have limited access to efficient public transport. The project will integrate these areas with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network, making daily commuting faster and more convenient.

The metro expansion is also expected to support the development of sports infrastructure in the surrounding region ahead of the proposed 2029 World Police Games and 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Reduced Traffic Congestion

The extension of the metro network to the airport is expected to provide an efficient alternative to road transportation, helping reduce vehicular traffic, shorten travel times, improve traffic flow, and enhance road safety across Ahmedabad.

By encouraging greater use of public transport, the project is expected to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-based vehicles and contribute to lower carbon emissions in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Economic Growth

Improved connectivity to the airport and other major transport hubs will increase mobility, boost productivity, and attract investment. Areas surrounding the new metro stations are expected to witness increased commercial activity and development.

Social Impact

The project will improve access to affordable and reliable public transportation for residents from various socio-economic backgrounds, reducing transport disparities and enhancing access to jobs, education, and essential services.

Employment Opportunities

The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A project is expected to generate employment for approximately 2,000 people during the peak construction period. Additionally, around 500 jobs are likely to be created for the operation and maintenance of the metro system after completion.

The government believes that Phase 2A will play a significant role in shaping Ahmedabad’s future growth by improving mobility, supporting sustainable urban development, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and visitors.
