9 dead, 33 injured in a terror attack on pilgrims in J&K

A terrorist attack on a bus carrying pilgrims in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district resulted in the deaths of nine people and injuries to 33 others. The bus, traveling to the Shiv Khori cave temple, was fired upon by terrorists, causing it to lose control and fall into a gorge.

Reasi’s District Magistrate Vishesh Mahajan confirmed the casualties, stating, “Nine pilgrims have died and 33 are injured.” The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region and the dangers faced by pilgrims. Reasi’s Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma detailed the incident, explaining, “Initial reports suggest that terrorists fired upon the passenger bus. Due to the firing, the bus driver lost control, and it fell into the gorge. Thirty-three people were injured in the incident. The rescue operation has been completed. The identities of the passengers have not been confirmed yet. They are not locals. The Shiv Khori shrine was secured, and area domination was done.”

Visuals from the scene showed bodies scattered along the hillside and the damaged bus. Residents assisted in rescue operations, and ambulances were lined up to transport the injured. Police, army, and paramilitary forces were promptly dispatched to the site. This attack represents a significant escalation in violence in the region, with Reasi district previously experiencing fewer terrorist activities compared to neighbouring areas like Rajouri and Poonch.
