“Putin Absolutely Crazy”: Trump’s 24-Hour Peace Promise Meets Cold Reality

After U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly stated he could end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office, his words have fallen flat on its face.

In recent days, Ukraine has endured its heaviest aerial assault since the beginning of the war. Russia launched nearly 370 drones and missiles in one night, resulting in at least 12 deaths, including three children. Strikes were reported in more than 22 locations, and Ukrainian officials described the attacks as “ruthless” and deliberately targeting civilians. President Zelenskyy condemned the international community’s muted response, specifically criticizing the United States’ “silence” as emboldening Putin.

Zelenskyy emphasized that the war does not pause for weekends or diplomacy, urging stronger and more consistent pressure on Moscow. He reiterated that Russia’s peace proposals—which involve Ukraine relinquishing control of annexed territories and abandoning its NATO ambitions—are unacceptable ultimatums.

It was telling that Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, has dismissed Trump’s claim outright, saying that such a complex crisis cannot be solved in a day. According to Nebenzia, peace talks between Russia and Ukraine nearly succeeded in April 2022 during negotiations in Istanbul, but were allegedly derailed by Western influence. He insisted that current realities, including Ukraine’s position and ongoing support from allies, make diplomacy more difficult now than in the past.

Sarcasm or Strategy? Trump Clarifies His Stance

In a rare admission, Trump recently stated he was being “a little bit sarcastic” with his 24-hour peace claim, though he still believes a deal is possible. “What I really mean is I’d like to get it settled,” he said. Trump maintains that his rapport with Putin could facilitate negotiations. His administration’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was recently in Moscow to discuss a U.S.-proposed temporary ceasefire, reportedly accepted by Ukraine but pending Russian response.

Despite these developments, Trump’s remarks have raised questions about the realism of his approach. Zelenskyy and Ukrainian officials remain skeptical, especially as Russia continues to intensify its assault. The Ukrainian president has stated that offering concessions, such as renouncing NATO aspirations or surrendering land, is out of the question.

An Uncertain Path to Peace

While Trump continues to push the idea of a quick resolution through diplomacy and personal influence, geopolitical realities tell a more complex story. Russia’s demands remain maximalist, and recent diplomatic efforts have faltered due to Putin’s refusal to engage in multilateral talks. As the humanitarian toll rises, Ukraine insists that only a peace plan based on the restoration of its territorial integrity is acceptable.

Meanwhile, U.S. and European allies remain cautious. While European nations prepare further sanctions, the U.S. has yet to impose new penalties despite repeated provocations. The question of whether Trump’s approach will lead to a breakthrough or further entrench divisions looms large as the war grinds on, with no end in sight.
