After Pahalgam Attack, India Strengthens Defence with Rs 63,000 Crore Rafale Deal

In the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which once again highlighted the persistent threat to India’s security, the country has moved swiftly to strengthen its military capabilities. On Monday, India signed a landmark deal with France to procure 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets for the Indian Navy, valued at an estimated Rs 63,000 crore.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, with Navy Vice Chief Vice Admiral K. Swaminathan also attending the proceedings. This significant government-to-government contract reflects India’s intent to bolster its maritime defence and counter evolving security threats.

The decision to finalize the purchase was made earlier this month by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Security. It comes amid escalating tensions with Pakistan and growing regional instability. The Rafale-M jets, designed specifically for carrier-based operations, will operate primarily from the deck of India’s indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, further enhancing the Navy’s operational reach and strike capabilities.

Under the terms of the deal, India will acquire 22 single-seat Rafale-M jets and 4 twin-seat trainer variants. The package also includes advanced weaponry, high-tech simulators, comprehensive crew training, and a five-year performance-based logistics support system.

The delivery schedule for these jets’ spans between 37 to 65 months following the signing of the contract. India is expected to make an initial payment of 15% of the total contract value upfront.

The Rafale-M fighters are equipped for multiple roles, including maritime strike missions, aerial combat, and reconnaissance, making them a formidable addition to India’s naval fleet. These advanced jets are expected to significantly boost India’s ability to project power and respond swiftly to emerging threats along its vast coastline and beyond.

At a time when internal security remains fragile following attacks like the one in Pahalgam, India’s rapid moves to reinforce its defence infrastructure send a strong signal of readiness and resilience to adversaries, both within and outside its borders.
