L2: Empuraan Controversy Reaches Parliament as Suresh Gopi Denies Political Pressure on Filmmakers

The controversy around L2: Empuraan, the much-anticipated sequel to Lucifer, has now spilled into India’s Parliament. Amid accusations of censorship and political interference, BJP MP and actor Suresh Gopi spoke out, denying any external pressure behind the voluntary 24 cuts made to the film.

Political Allegations Spark Parliamentary Debate

On Thursday, the Rajya Sabha witnessed heated discussion as CPI(M) MP John Brittas alleged that political forces influenced the editing of Empuraan, particularly its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Responding to these claims, Suresh Gopi clarified that no pressure had been applied on the filmmakers by the censor board or any political entity.

Gopi emphasized that the decision to alter the film was taken solely by the production team, including the lead actor and director. He also revealed that his own name was removed from the film’s thank-you card at his personal request and asserted that he was willing to face any consequence if his claims were proven false.

Film’s Content Sparks Public and Political Backlash

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy, L2: Empuraan follows the journey of Stephen Nedumpally, played by Mohanlal, and his close associate Zayed Masood, played by Sukumaran. The film includes scenes that fictionalize events inspired by the Gujarat riots, showing Masood as a victim of the violence. These sequences stirred controversy, with critics claiming the film unfairly portrayed right-wing groups and national agencies.

The backlash extended to social media and political circles, prompting the filmmakers to submit the film for re-evaluation and voluntarily implement 24 cuts. These edits involved removing or altering scenes referencing communal violence, violence against women, a sensitive religious structure, and character traits reminiscent of real-life political figures.

Legal Challenge Rejected by Kerala High Court

The controversy escalated further when a plea was filed in the Kerala High Court seeking a ban on the film’s screening. The petitioner, BJP member Vijeesh—who was later suspended from the party—alleged that the film insulted the Ministry of Defence and portrayed national agencies in a damaging light.

However, the Kerala High Court dismissed the petition, questioning its legitimacy. The judge asked the petitioner whether he had even watched the film and noted that the CBFC had already certified it for release. The court observed that no complaints of violence or unrest had been reported as a result of the film and accused the petitioner of seeking publicity rather than justice.

Filmmakers Apologize, Release Re-edited Version

In response to the growing criticism, producer Antony Perumbavoor announced that the team had decided to go ahead with a re-edit of the film, which would remove or alter the controversial content. The revised version, with 24 cuts, is now playing in theatres worldwide.

Lead actor Mohanlal issued a public apology, stating that the film unintentionally hurt the sentiments of many. He emphasized that the decision to remove sensitive scenes was made in full awareness of their potential impact on viewers. The statement reinforced the team’s commitment to responsible filmmaking and respectful storytelling.

Empuraan Defies Controversy at the Global Box Office

Despite the controversy, L2: Empuraan has emerged as a massive commercial success. The film grossed $19.4 million worldwide during its opening weekend, making it the third highest-grossing film globally at that time, trailing only Disney’s Snow White and A Working Man.

On its opening day, the film earned over $7 million after selling more than $6 million worth of advance tickets. By the end of its first weekend, the total collection had surpassed $19 million, and it crossed the $20 million mark the following Monday. In the United States alone, the Malayalam-language film grossed more than $1 million, ranking as the eleventh highest-grossing film over the weekend.

PVR INOX Ltd CEO Gautam Dutta reported that over 123,000 tickets were sold in advance for opening day and around 200,000 for the weekend, reflecting strong audience interest in India and abroad.

A Creative Vision Caught in Political Crossfire

Empuraan is the third directorial project by Prithviraj Sukumaran, following Lucifer and Bro Daddy. It combines elements of political thriller, emotional drama, and action, focusing on themes of revenge, ideological conflict, and the nexus between politics and organized crime.

While many have praised the film’s bold narrative and engaging performances, right-wing groups and publications like Organiser, the RSS mouthpiece, have criticized the depiction of certain communities and institutions. The film’s portrayal of its antagonist and references to real-life political events have further fueled the ongoing discourse on censorship, freedom of expression, and the boundaries of artistic liberty.

Conclusion: Empuraan’s Impact Beyond the Screen

As L2: Empuraan continues its theatrical run in its re-edited form, the film stands at the intersection of cinema and politics. It has sparked meaningful debate on the power and responsibility of storytelling in a politically sensitive environment. Despite the controversy—and perhaps partly because of it—the film has captured public attention, making it one of the most talked-about cinematic releases of the year.

Whether viewed as a bold work of political art or a controversial cinematic gamble, Empuraan has already made its mark—not just at the box office, but in the nation’s political and cultural dialogue.
