IndiGo to connect Gaya and Bangkok with new direct flights from October 26 

New twice-weekly service will strengthen Bihar’s international connectivity and link two destinations with deep Buddhist ties 

IndiGo will launch non-stop flights between Gaya and Bangkok from October 26, opening a direct international air link between Bihar and Thailand and giving pilgrims and tourists a faster way to travel between two destinations deeply rooted in Buddhist heritage. 

The twice-weekly service is expected to strengthen Gaya’s position as an international gateway for Buddhist tourism, while also expanding travel and economic opportunities for Bihar’s tourism and hospitality sectors. 

Gaya is home to Bodh Gaya, where the Mahabodhi Temple marks the site where Siddhartha Gautama is believed to have attained enlightenment. The UNESCO World Heritage Site draws pilgrims from across the Buddhist world, including Thailand, making the new connection particularly significant for religious and cultural travel. 

For travellers from Thailand, the direct flight will eliminate the need for a connecting journey to reach one of Buddhism’s most important pilgrimage sites. For travellers from Bihar and neighbouring regions, meanwhile, it will provide a direct link to Bangkok, one of Southeast Asia’s major tourism, business, and transport hubs. 

The new route also comes as India-Thailand air connectivity continues to expand. IndiGo currently operates more than 140 weekly flights between the two countries, connecting Bangkok with Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bhubaneswar. 

The airline also operates direct flights to Phuket from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, and to Krabi from Delhi. Adding Gaya to the network further expands IndiGo’s footprint in Thailand while bringing another Indian city into the international aviation map. 

Beyond pilgrimage traffic, the new service could have a wider impact on Bihar’s tourism economy. Greater international accessibility can support hotels, restaurants, local transport operators, tour companies, guides, and other businesses that depend on visitors to Bodh Gaya and surrounding destinations. 

The timing is also significant for a state that has been seeking to strengthen its tourism infrastructure and attract more international visitors. While Bihar has several major historical and religious attractions, international air connectivity has traditionally been a constraint on its ability to tap larger overseas tourist markets. 

The Gaya-Bangkok service therefore represents more than another addition to IndiGo’s international network. It creates a direct link between a major Southeast Asian capital and one of India’s most important spiritual destinations, potentially making it easier for visitors to move between the two Buddhist centres. 

Customers will be able to book the flights through IndiGo’s website, mobile app, and authorised travel partners. The service will commence on October 26, 2026.
