Congress Launches ‘City Transformation Group’ to Address Urban Issues on Rajiv Gandhi’s Birth Anniversary

Mumbai, August 20, 2026: The Maharashtra Congress on Thursday launched the ‘City Transformation Group’ in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur to work on pressing urban issues and promote planned, inclusive and sustainable development.

The initiative was launched at Tilak Bhavan on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi. AICC Secretary and City Transformation Group president Sachin Sawant said the platform would be open to citizens, social organisations, activists, professionals, students and Gen Z.

Sawant said rapid migration to cities is putting increasing pressure on urban infrastructure. Clean drinking water, better roads, efficient public transport, reduced traffic congestion, quality healthcare, education and effective waste management must be treated as basic priorities.

He said the initiative aims to provide an independent platform to highlight citizens’ concerns and take them to the government and administration. The group, he added, should evolve beyond a political campaign into a people’s movement.

The campaign will be expanded to all municipal corporation areas across Maharashtra in the coming months.
